NHS Membership and Applications

Tech News — By Giancarlo Malchiodi on September 21, 2009 at 6:49 pm

The National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the largest organizations in the United States that recognizes academic excellence and community service among outstanding high school students. NHS honors those students who exhibit excellence in the four pillars of Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service. By being affiliated with Brooklyn Tech’s National Honor Society, members are rewarded for their academic excellence and even get access to an exclusive NHS lounge on the ninth floor that provides computers for members to use in a study space during all lunch periods and after school. The lounge will also occasionally hold special workshops to provide NHS members with tutoring and help with parts of the college application process, such as college essay writing. By being involved in Brooklyn Tech’s NHS chapter, students demonstrate their enormous potential to colleges and are equipped with something significant to put on their college applications.

The NHS application is attached and will also be available online at bths.edu starting on Tuesday, September 22nd. Keep in mind that because this is a special short term opportunity only, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who are interested in joining NHS for the 2009-2010 academic year should hand in their completed applications to room 1W2 by no later than Tuesday, September 29th.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Tuesday, September 29th, 2009 in Room 1W2

  • I wish the application weren't until much later in the school year. I didn't have enough points 2 months ago, I don't have enough points now. I need more time to get my community service :(

I think you can always get a letter from your internship stating how many hours you WILL complete; a few of my friends did so last year, stating they will be getting the hours over the summer from where they worked at.

This isn't going to be the only time this year you can sign up. Towards the end of the year, NHS will be accepting new members again.

True, however long term membership in NHS gives old members benefits that new members will not. It also looks best for Juniors to be in NHS in their Junior year than their Senior year.
