Letter on Points of clarification on Lunch Form Policy

Announcements — By BTHSnews on September 28, 2009 at 7:48 pm

Hello Technites,

It was noticed that students were outraged with my initial message that they will not receive theirs service credits if they do not hand in their lunch form.

That is not the case. The message was communicated poorly which resulted in havoc and distress.

No such policy is in place. Service credits will NOT be voided if one does not turn in one’s lunch form.

However, please turn one in by the September 30th deadline.

Remember that if we qualify for Title I funding our school will receive nearly $4 million extra in funding to preserve faculty, AP courses, and Major Courses – all of which define Tech.

We will only know if we qualify for that money if EVERYONE hands in a lunch form.

Thank You and apologies for any inconveniences caused.

-Nicky Chen

Replies from the forums:

  • Hm, maybe more students would actually give in the forms if there was some kind of incentive, such as being able to get service credits by giving it in.

    ._.

That would mean that if you don't bring in your form, you won't get credits.

That would be a form of punishment D:
  • To me, it doesn't seem too much worse than having people pay money to get their credits. One way the school gets $5, the other way they get $1400 or so. Well, I know it's not that concrete but it's something similar.

5 dollars and 1400 dollars has a BIG difference :o

This one is tougher than the original, um, proposal, since, it would mean you would be getting service credits for performing a service for the school, which is really quite different, and service credits in general already exist. Anyway, I would tend to prefer the incentive be at a higher level, which is why I had suggested what I had in the other thread.

Yeah lol sorry if I wasn't being clear, I meant that in a positive way. That is, it's better to have them bring in the lunch forms rather than bring in $5.
  • If we don't get the Title I money next year that is based on lunch form submissions, we will not have any clubs, after school activities or trips. We will likely lose around 50 staff members which would in turn eliminate most of the electives and majors including the entire music department, senior math, and language courses and essentially ruin our school. Enough incentive??

It is not the only incentive, but it is definitely a strong incentive. However, I'm not convinced it has reached all the ears it should have, and for those it has, all have probably not properly processed its significance. So, I wonder, if the deadline has not passed: Can a letter, phone call and/or email (with links to a PDF or something) go out to THE PARENTS who still have not submitted their forms (or if you're not allowed to select that way, to everybody even if they did submit it)?
  • User Avatar Noldi says:
I agree with xyz. It was all over the announcements, but some kids are ignorant and don't care about it and parents are uninformed. However, when the school calls home, parents are always curious about what they're going to say, so that would be a smart way to inform parents about lunch forms.

And I'm curious, how has this lunch form incident affected other schools, like Stuy? Are they in the same situation as us?

EVERY school is in the same boat, even non-NYC schools.

We can lose Title I or get less people in the school. My sisters new Elementary school have budget issues too.

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't mind less people in Tech...

It's a mixed bag. Anyway, less students could definitely mean loosing these funds. I know for certain on elementary school lost both (I think all) Title 4 funds and (I think some) Title 1 funds when the district rezoned how the school was populated.

I don't know about other states or cities, but NYC public schools have been reamed for so long, it's amazing to me their functioning at all. The money from the lunch forms is so brainless to obtain (if we qualify) but really is truly make or break for many things.

Anyway, I'm confused about the "exact" deadline, but my daughter says that everbody in her prefect sent in but one kid. So if that's true across the board then it means that folks finally did response (and without being "punished") though I still say parents were not properly brought into the loop, and if they were forms could have been sent in earlier and the missing ones might even have been sent in.

Well, that's understandable. You're not going to give a school with 3,500 students as many classes as a school with 5,000 students.
  • Is this issue fixed up???

    Everybody handed it in???
