Throughout our high school career, there are always classes that are necessary to take. But do you think that it is fair that we are told exactly what classes we need to take? Don’t you wish that we had a little bit more freedom?
I agree that we should have classes that are imperative to graduate such as English and Global History, but I believe that there should be elective classes that we can choose from- electives that can help us in a specific major in Brooklyn Tech.. For example, if one was interested in majoring in law and society, then in freshman year one should be able to take an elective class that prepares one for that major. Not only can broaden one’s interest, but it can also help in deciding if the major is the right major. If it isn’t right for you, then one can simply take another elective. But if it is what you enjoy, then one can simply stick with it. Also, these courses will not only make students happy, but it will also satisfy the teachers. Teachers wouldn’t have to deal with students that regret taking the major that they chose. It’s a win win situation.
Along with the academic electives, I think that there should also be an art elective. Sure, we have DDP, but what about the students that are “not technical drawing material”, like myself. I try my best, and sometimes my best just isn’t enough. There should also be an elective class for all of the arts. For example, what about drama or dance? There should be a class just for those aspects. We have very talented students here, we also have talent shows and plays that show of their abilities, but not everyone wants to display their talent just like that, there are some that still need a little more time to grow into themselves, and these classes could be exactly where they do it. I know I would totally grab at the opportunity to have a chance to dance in school for a whole period and not get in trouble for it, but instead get a good grade, who wouldn’t?
So, have you been thinking about all of the things I have just mentioned? If you haven’t then you should, because everyone deserves freedom in everything they do, even us, the leaders of tomorrow.

  • So yeah, it's obvious that I would like this editorial, but it does make sense.

Although Brooklyn Tech is a technical school that aims students towards the engineering and scientific field, there are a small number of students who merely got into Tech because they wanted to get into a good high school. Elective classes would be good for preparing students for majors. Maybe the school can keep DDP as a mandatory class for freshmen during their first term, but give the students a choice in classes for their second term and sophomore year.

You might say no, Tech's a school for engineering, but then why do we even bother having majors like Media or Law and Society?
