What is this key club that everyone’s talking about? Are they selling keys? I sure do want elevator keys to go to my next class. Unfortunately key club does not sell keys. In fact, the Key in key club stands for: Kiwanis Educates Youth. This club is a internationally student-led organization that is supported by 5 other schools in New York City, including Brooklyn Technical High school. But What are the benefits of joining Key Club?
The idea of Key Club is to develop capable, caring and confident leaders through service opportunities. The best part is, one can get 6 credits per year while receiving service hours and make new friends at the same time! The Brooklyn Tech KEY Club has reached a prodigious amount of members, over 350 members in the past year. Showing how amorous this club can look to the other students in Brooklyn Tech.

Our Key club president Rodney Agnant was kind enough to sit down and have a interview with us:

HC : “What is this so called “key club” and why did you sign up for this club?”

RA: ”KEY Club is a high school volunteer and community service organization. It is derived from its adult version Kiwanis and KEY is an acronym that means Kiwanis Educates Youth. Honestly, I signed up for it back in my freshman year because there was a foreign exchange trip that they were trying to have. In the end, they were unable to, but then I learned that there was a lot more to Key Club than trips.”

HC: “Why did you apply to become the president of key club?”

RA: “Freshman year, I felt like I was inactive and sophomore year I wanted to take more initiative. I originally only wanted to be a committee head, but at the beginning of my sophomore year I found out there were no committee heads. The advisor, President and Lieutenant Governor at the time actually encouraged me to run for President and after giving it some thoughts, I decided to give it a try.”

HC: ”What are the benefits of being socially active in Key club?”

RA: ”Being socially active is really important in Key Club because there is a diverse amount of personalities. As you do more events and meet more people, you realize that there are students who are going through the same struggles that you are and share similar struggles. It is important to be social anywhere, but in an organization like Key Club, you learn how to take qualities of other teammates to make a new driving force.”

HC: ”Would you recommend Key club for every Brooklyn Technical High School student? Why or Why not?”

RA: ”I definitely recommend everyone to give their best foot forward to Key Club. Doing community service gives you a sense of gratification and accomplishment and a true sense of what it means to be part of a community. It is not only about the block that you live on or the school you attend, but the local community really is the whole world we live in.”

HC: ”How many credits do you receive in this club and what do I do receive this credit?”

RA: ”Every term you receive 6 credits, giving you 12 for the year. In order to receive this credit you need to attend meetings and do events. The more active you get in these events, whether it’s by leading the event by being Project Captain or bringing donations, the more value each event will have. Every event is worth a certain amount of points and by the end of the year if you have 200 points, you will receive full credit.”

HC: ”If a stranger asks you in the middle of the street, what is this key making club that is in Brooklyn Tech? What would your first sentence response be?”

RA: “Assembling a team and using your passion to follow through with your dream.”

HC: ”Can anyone join for the Key club or is Key club looking for specific students that meets their requirements?”

RA: ”Anyone can join this club.”

HC: ”For the last question, what would you want to say to the people who might want to joing key club? (Friendly reminders, advice, etc…)”

RA: ”One of the best things about this club is that it will help you manage your time and become more independent. The endeavor might seem tough at first, but it’s nothing close to impossible. Given some focus and time, not only will you find time for events, but you will find time to think of new events and ideas. Key Club doesn’t run itself, it needs every member to be involved.”

Thank you Rodney for your time!
