About Us
What is BTHSnews?
The simple answer to that question is: BTHSnews is a student-run online newspaper.
But there’s more to it than that. BTHSnews is unique in that it covers and analyzes a wide range of topics relevant to the Tech community. From school news and events reported on and analyzed by our staff, to official news and announcements sent to us from Brooklyn Tech itself, to special articles from various news sources, we are the most up-to-date source for information and news about and for Brooklyn Tech.
With that said, we are not directly affiliated with Tech. We are independently run. BTHSnews receives no funding for our hosting and website development, although we receive a yearly stipend from Tech’s Student Government, which we use for our organization within the school, the BTHSnews Club. The purpose of the Club is to meet weekly to discuss articles and issues concerning the website.
Without oversight from Brooklyn Tech, BTHSnews is all the more unique. We are completely operated by Brooklyn Tech students and alumni. Our webmaster and founder, Francis Gulotta (class of 2002), continues to provide web hosting, but does not oversee day-to-day operations. Students write, edit, and publish their own content. Because of our continued regard for the professional and objective nature of the website, both in the forums and the news articles we publish, we rarely if ever run into any controversy – but when we do, we take measures to make sure it never happens again, like any good news organization. Not only do thousands of students of Brooklyn Tech read our website on a regular basis, but staff members (including Principal Randy Asher, who is a regular poster on our Forums) and parents continue to be regular visitors.
What do we offer to BTHSnews members?
The BTHSnews team is a diverse team of people who have very different ideas and styles of thinking. But when it comes down to the drawing board, we all work together and compromise. BTHSnews is a teamwork-orientated group, and everyone is open to each other’s ideas and concerns. No one ever is told to be silent. Our writers are free to write about what they want, but mainly focus on their chosen branch and often have deadlines on their articles.
We offer four branches for our members: Editors are mainly the chief staff members of the BTHSnews Club; Media and Communications covers school events and provides analysis and student body opinion on changes and events going on at the school, as well as provides op-ed articles and photography/video; Outreaching and Brainstorming promotes BTHSnews, finds ways to involve the community with BTHSnews, and thinks of innovative ways for the club to keep in touch with the community on our Forums; and The Wizard Branch deals with web development and design, and with fixing technical issues/site maintenance.
