ATLANTA (AP) -- BellSouth Corp. said Thursday it has completed the sale of some if its Latin American assets and will use the proceeds to help pay for Cingular Wireless LLC's $41 billion purchase of Redmond, Wash.-based AT&T Wireless Services Inc.

The Atlanta-based company said it has closed on the transfer to Spanish telecommunications giant Telefonica SA of its assets in three of 10 Latin American counties where it has operations. The transfer of its assets in the remaining seven countries is expected by year end.

BellSouth announced in March that it would sell its Latin American assets to Telefonica for $5.85 billion. It says it will receive $1.2 billion for the assets in the three countries that it transferred Thursday.

Spokesman Jeff Battcher said the proceeds will be used to help pay for the Cingular-AT&T Wireless deal.
In February, Atlanta-based Cingular, a joint venture of BellSouth and San Antonio-based SBC Communications Inc., agreed to pay nearly $41 billion in cash to buy AT&T Wireless to create the nation's largest mobile phone company.

The deal between the second- and third-largest U.S. wireless companies would create a cellular giant with 46 million subscribers and 70,000 employees. Current market leader Verizon Wireless has 37.5 million customers.

Justice Department approval of the Cingular-AT&T Wireless deal could come as early as later Thursday. That would leave only Federal Communications Commission approval left to close the deal.

The deal would be a boon for Cingular's efforts to cut costs, fill service gaps and expand its spectrum, or radio frequency, in several key U.S markets, thus enabling it to offer wireless Internet access at broadband speed.

Some fear the merger could reduce the fierce competition that has driven down prices in the U.S. cellular market, trimming the number of national players from six to five. The deal also is expected to result in significant job cuts.

Good news for Cingular subscribers like me! That is one of the reasons why we signed up for Cingular in the first place (Rollover and AT&T coverage)

They're going to take your phone and set it on fire, and charge you $50 for services and you have to finish out your contract.

Anyways, with this sale, will ATT be cheaper? I was going to switch to ATT, but should I go for Cingular?

I really don't know, but I think that that if you buy an AT&T plan with their certain conditions and etc, it will "rollover" to Cingular, and your plan will not change one bit when they merge.

Cingular will probably get petter range, but not ATT. ATT probably already has a box set up on a cell phone tower everywhere Cingular does.

As for service, double the "leach" boxes hooked up to cell phone towers should mean better service for both, but most noticeably for Cingular.

ATT has always had good service, and they bought more space on cell phone towers before the merge, so that was the service increase.

People say Verizon sucks too, but Verizon does have the best service.

It's because people prefer to give you their misguided opinion over facts. If they have Sprint, they're going to say all the other companies suck.

I don't like AT&T Wireless nor Cingular. However, I'm using AT&T Wireless because T-Mobile has a stupid rule where if you want to open a new account, you must not have closed one within 6 months.

Cingular, I know is just horrible in NYC, even though they share T-Mobile's towers oddly enough.

AT&T? I've used it since TDMA (still have my old Panasonic Allure) and it was absolutely horrible in NYC, worse than what Cingular is today. GSM is better, but call quality isn't as good as T-Mo in NYC, imo, even with a full 6 bars, my dad and I agree with that. Outside NYC, the call quality's outstanding and definitely beats T-Mo, but I use it more IN NYC, so, get the picture? Nothing's wrong with our phones itself, I can rule that out.

Well, if you want the best reception, then Verizon. No one comes close.

The other companies just have fancier, GSM phones to compensate for their lack of service/coverage.

Yea and my uncle said his T-mobile phone worked in 42nd Street Station. Well we need to have a survey to see which companies/phones work at certain subway stations( not outdoor stations)

In response to Danny's post:

NEXTEL is only something you get if you think it is cool to have that "Direct Connect" feature (personally, I think it is obnoxious). Many kids in the school have those and think they are great. The phones for NEXTEL/Boost Mobile's plans are VERY expensive if you can't get any sort of rebate. Boost Mobile is a service that is something like $2 a day to get unlimited "Direct Connect" and you get nothing else. This is only good if all your friends have NEXTEL/Boost.

Verizon has THE BEST service in NYC. You can even talk in some subway stations (including Dekalb Av, Pacific St BMT, 14th Street N/R/Q/W). However the drawback is that they are about $20 more expensive than Cingular on many of their plans (notably the family share plan).

Whatever would be more practical for you is what you should get.
