sorry, very old news for me.

Current AT&T Wireless customers are allowed to be grandfathered into the new Cingular system, we get to keep our contract terms.

I'm using AT&T atm only because T-Mobile has a stupid rule where one cannot open a new account after closing one account.

I noticed that AT&T is really based on contracts with other carriers. In NY State alone, AT&T Wireless network is fairly weak upstate. In Western Dutchess County, I roam on and off of "T-Mobile"'s network and also some mystery network "USA 560." Going up to New Paltz in Ulster County, I roam between some weak AT&T's tower, briefly on a T-Mobile then on Cingular's network.

If I do go to Korea this summer, I'll find out what they use in Anchorage :)

Yay, I'll get rollover minutes! Now I need to get a new phone, I have had the same SE T616 since the day of the fire, November 7th, 2003. (After we were released, I went to the city, met my dad, and took care of some things. Then we went to the ATTWS store to replace a POS Nokia.)

well, i dont use ATT, but im noticing this USA 590 network you guyz r mentioning. I was visitin my moms this past weekend for thanksgiving. I was roming the WHOLE time. I use t-mobile. the only service i had down there in NC was Cingular (always) and switching between ATT and this USA 490 network (not a typo, is 490)
I cant belive t-mobile is so popular, but they barely have any network service owned by THEM.

btw, that USA 560 is Cell One (Dobson CellularOne), but my phone apparently does not have the capability to read alpha tags other than the ones programmed in the cellphone firmware.

That USA 490 is probably Suncom, an AT&T affiliate.

BTW, you'll know that your phone can displayed updated alpha tags if your phone can autochange the time (auto-DST setting) and also if you see: "AT&T/Cingular" as the phone display. Mine cannot, so I still see it as "AT&T Wireless", my phone does not autoset DST and mine will display "unknown" network providers as "USA xxx" (x being network ID tags)

"i can call from the center of the first floor w/o problems."

Really?!

I can call from anywhere in the school with my Verizon. I also get reception inside of DeKalb Ave, and Pacific Street/Atlantic Ave.

Yeah, go Sprint.

Though I have Cingular, I will still say Verizon is still the best since it has the biggest and strongest CDMA network in the metro area.

My AT&T phone worked from Nostrand Ave to Bdwy Jct. T-mobile works great at the times Square Station. A lot of phone are now working in subway stations. I heard they have phones work in subways in others stations. I would pay extra a month to have my phone work at a subway station.,

TDMA/ CDMA technologies aare declining as more countries switch to GSM. Verizon and Sprint , in my opinion , wouldnt change thier technologies( remeber what happened to Att when the switched) so the US will also miss out on another worldwide standard( eg. metric )

CDMA technologies maybe declining but their networks are still prominent in the city. It is true though that the fact that Verizon and Sprint are on CDMA will cause problems for them in the future. That is why Verizon is introducing dual-band phones to lure customers. Win-Win situation for Verizon currently.
