If you want to learn "coding" you should decide on a language which you want to learn (my personal favorite is Java) then pick up a book (check out Amazon or B&N) and that should get you on your way.

start with a implementation of basic, like quickbasic. You dont need html/cgi/php, you want to program, not we design. If you have any questions instant message me on AIM.

I can guarantee that anyone who is proposing to teach him to program through Insant Messanger has very little to teach.

QuickBASIC is a good place to start for a beginner but you won't get anywhere without a good book.

Also, I assume he is talking about programming not scripting so php links and (for some reason) MySQL links won't help much. And the Computer Science major is a must for anyone serious.

PS: Regarding the Java sucks comment: Java is a fine tuned, highly intuitive language. It is the future of programming. Not that I'm saying C++ isn't good, but there is no basis to say that Java sucks.

Argh, what am i supposed to do? write up a whole tutorial just for him? And you can get far in qb without a book, i learned the basics of it in an hour. c/c++ is like a standard language. JAVA is intepreted, and it is alot less powerful then c/c++. Even though almost evryone has java interpreter installed, its still lacking. In c/c++ you can basically make your own operating system, What good programs are written in java? none that i know, only small games.

Java is not less powerful than C++. Anything that can be done in C++ can be done in Java.

And if you think no "good" programs can be made in Java, you are simply uninformed. The US Airforce recently purchased a $100k application written in Java that allows military generals to have a constant, real time, 3D view of the battlefield and all units on the battlefield. NASA has likewise asked congress for 5 million dollars (if I remember correctly) for a similar program for its own purposes - also written in Java.

But thats enough with going off topic. Lets get back on it.

Here is how I started programming:

First language I learned was BASIC, then VB, then C++ then Java. Seems to have worked out well for me.

Maybe im wrong but, is there a java compiler? or only interpreter(I really don't know, not trying to be starcastic). If there is no compiler then, a plus is c/c++ creates executable stand alone applications not dependant on anything, except for i guess a OS, and library files. Also how can you write a Operating system in java? parse the bootloader/filesystem with a java interpreter written in c/c++?
