In French earlier today (now yesterday)l, my friend and I benchmarked my TI-83+ Silver Edition vs. my friend's TI-89 Titanium.

I installed a polynomial root factoring program from the TI website.

He had a CAS (computer algebra system) system built in.

We each factored a polynomial on our respective calculators that was degree 9, and used the same coefficients.

The TI-89 Ti took roughly 1/10 the time it took for my TI-83+ SE to factor the same polynomial...must get a TI-89 Ti asap... :)

Damn is my calc slower, even though its processor is slightly faster. The TI-89 Ti has a 12 MHz 68000 processor, but mine has a 15 MHz Zilog Z80 processor. The 68000 series processor is more efficient (and is also the ancestor of the IBM G5 chip...'nuff said) ;)

Will I be required or need to buy a graphing calculator in my future years?

You should have one when you hit Precal/Adv. Algebra.

well, a graphing calsulator is required on the math b regents, they expect that you have it for some of the questions. also, it is a must for any AP calculus class/test you take (probably also intuitive calc, but i'm not sure)

if you are choosing between the ti-83 and ti-89, i highly recommend to get the 89. it does many more things more effectively, in less time, and simplifies a lot of calculus problems (when you get to them that is :) )

I got one for about $130. Keep in mind for precal, you still need your 83 for the Math B regents, 89s are not allowed.

I don't think the 84 is allowed either due to some added capabilities it has.
