Why people prefer Ipods:
Build Quality - Beats the hell out of any other player
RELIABLE
Weight - damn light
Layout - Very efficient, simple
Interface - Unbeatable, period.
iTunes - f'ing fast transfers + reliable
Excellent sound quality for a DAP (although not the best)
Supports MP3's, AAC, WAV, AIFF
Can be used as an external HD
Battery life has been improving over time
If you want FM radio get a an adapter. As for the microphone, its an MP3 PLAYER, not a recording device. If you want a mic, get a tape recorder

First, it's iPods

Weight depends on what the user prefers. Lightness sometimes tend to make consumers think it's cheap and plastic-y whereas heavier devices are seen as more "rugged."
The iPod
is one of the heavier HD audio players, with the 20GB at 5.9 ounces and the 60 gig at 6.4 ounces. Other competing hard drive audio players, such as the Rio Karma for example have matching capacity (20GB model) weighting in at 5.5 ounces with a built in FM tuner with the same battery life.
Layout, I can't argue with that since I've never acutally used an iPod or any MP3 player for that fact (other than my Clie). There are some people that dislike the interface as well.
Different audio players support different formats, since AAC and AIFF are Apple licensed and is the favorable format for Apples popular iTunes store they took the cake on that one. MP3 and WAV are considered standard to any audio player which are mixed with OGG Vorbis which is more efficient than a lot of the formats (not neccisarily AAC/AIFF), ASF, WMA, etc.
Hard drive DAPs are more vulnerable to environmental damage than flash players are, and cannot sustain normal operation during heavy use.
