Well, I wanted to reset my whole computer (actually, it's a laptop -.-), and I will have to save some things to cd. The only problem is that I have certain programs that I don't have the cd to (such as Word, Excel, Adobe Photoshop, etc) since the computer store would upload it, and they took the cd back. I don't want to have to pay another 100 bucks for that cd, but I don't want to lose my Microsoft Files either. What should I do?

(And if you could tell me how to reset my computer, I would be grateful for that too -.-)

well why don't you save the files you need first to a disc. Then you have to reformat your computer if that whats you mean by resetting. The way that i usually do that is you have to put a disc that has your operating system. you put the disc in and it will ask you if you want to keep your data or if you want to clear it. Why don't you just set your computer back to an earlier time period? It is called system restore...

Are you referring to "formatting"? Resetting wouldn't do jack to your computer (unless there's a severe hardware defect when your computer's resetting). And I have yet to see a notebook with a dedicated reset button.

Why did the computer store take the CD back? It seems unwarranted and unjustified unless you omitted some details. Demand them back.

Oh no, it's just that I had bought the laptop with the purpose of using Microsoft Word, and so the people included a Microsoft Cd in with the deal, but they they said that they'll keep the disk if my mom wants to pay less for the overall deal. I tried to say no, but my mom weren't above saving that 50 extra bucks.

And yes, I think it's reformatting. I can't go to system restore, cuz that it won't wipe out any viruses or un-erasable files that the third party files loaded onto my poor laptop. I can't just SAVE the Microsoft Word in because I don't think that's how it works anyways.

Like 180searchassistant. The thing just comes back and bites me hard in the rear whenever I would try to erase it from the harddrive. So my friend suggested that I reformat the whole thing, and save what I can.

Try Spyware Doctor - http://www.download.com/Spyware-Doctor/300...4-10293212.html first.

If you still need to reformat - http://www.resnet.un...reformatxp.html

As for your Microsoft Word, there's nothing you can do other than go back and pay for it again, only this time keep the disc.

So let me get this straight, you're given the software and corresponding keys, but you're only given the install CD if and only if you pay extra? Ok then.

Here's the one solution:

Save the serial numbers. If they're legit, power to you.

Make sure to find friends who have those program installers/program install CD with them. And use your own serial numbers to install.

BTW for the future, unless the license/usage agreement explicitly says otherwise, you are allowed to create a personal use backup copy of the program.

Just for the record, I do not condone nor support piracy.

If you have the serial number, and you bought the program legitimately, then I believe it is legal to download the software from the internet. I do not think that is called piracy, since you have already bought the program and the serial key, and simply need to make a back-up disc for yourself.
