Is there anyway to obtain someone's IP address through AIM? I know you can always send a link to them and get an IP address but I'm not a computer head...see I tried this method on myself but my IP Address on the tracker site is different than the one under properties when I click to see my connection info...thx

If you're connected through a router, then the IP you see under your connection info on your computer will start with something like 192.168.*.* -- this is your local IP, and means nothing to the outside world. The one you see on sites like ipinfo.info is the important one.

I don't think there is an easy way to do such a thing through AIM. However, there are PHP scripts that secretly send visitor information (IP, sys info, etc.) to a predetermined email address. If you could get him to open it, you'll have everything you requested. I wont be aiding you in your scare tactics, only point you in the right direction, so no links.

An IP address can only be seen if you are connected to the LAN (Local Area Network).
Most IP addresses change every time when logged on the network(have to change the properties).

Both untrue. The IPs you see when in a LAN are A)Issued by the DHCP server or B)Static, and set up on the individual machine. Your IP changes if your ISP uses a dynamic IP policy. It doesn't change every time if you're on broadband. Usually, it flushes every month or so.

If you want to get someone's IP on AIM, you'd need to establish a direct connection to them, and transfer some kind of file. The netstat command allows you to see any TCP/IP connections, so check for the port the transfer is running on and you'd get the person's hostmask. You'd have to resolve it for their IP.

I don't know why you would want someone's IP anyway. Unless you're some kind of script kiddie, in which case you should give up. You wouldn't know what to do with an IP anyway.

Can't you hack someone or do something malignant to one's computer knowing their IP address?

True but I would prefer that those things would not be mentioned in this thread.

Security. Z obviously takes that very seriously.

Just for informational purposes... If you use a Windows built-in tool (probably built-in for Macs as well. An optional program, if you use Linux), you can actually get the IP address.

Edit: Transparent's post mentions that built in tool and the advice provided there is very valid. If somebody hounding you is a problem, just block that s/n. Or if you're worried that the person might use a different s/n, make sure to block all users not in your buddy list. Problem solved... unless that person already got into a s/n that you trust...

Yup. Can't blame others for not having the common sense to protect yourself against blatant malignant behavior.

You can find it for free. There are numerous PHP resources on the Net.

It'll make more sense if you read the first page. Flippa and I were talking about a PHP script that sends visitor information via email to a predetermined email addy which is an easier alternative to obtaining an IP through AIM. The tricky part is getting that person to click on the link.

I doubt that gt would be able to preform networking tasks, but who knows?

yea, thats true getting them to click the link would be hard(but not if they're stupid) or you could just have someone hack AIM as AOL has everyone's IPs...

I did read the first page, which is why I'm wondering why you're going into PHP when that's clearly not an option.

Oh, good luck "hacking AOL." :/
