uh...let's say someone has 80 hrs of service. Then they theoretically try to spend their whole summer before senior year trying to get 220 hrs of servicve. is that possible?

I gathered something along the lines of 110 hours in about the first 4 weeks of summer before senior year (working an unpaid internship with the DEP). Had I continued working through, I might've gathered 200 or more. Its definately possible, as long as you are volunteering 5 days a week for about 6 hours a day throughout your summer.

Just ask yourself how much you want to be in BETA before you commit yourself to doing that.

I got around 250 hours of volunteer service in one summer. You can do it too, but as long as you're willing to work every single workday, for like 8 hours.

i applied for a program called SCA(Student Conservation Association), it sounds fun to me, you maintain trails, rebuild habitats etc. but it also counts as community service and if you get accepted you can get like 180 hours of community service from it...and thats only for like 30 days....so if you did that for 1 month(its free too!) and then did some work in the park a couple days each week you'd be set

for beta, do you apply during the year before the year you want to get into? like if you want to get in as a senior, do you need to have all your hrs and application done before the start of senior year?

Yeah, at the start of senior year. The apps will be collected around early October. You'll get a call from the officers, saying whether or not you were admitted.

For NHS, you need to have all your stuff ready earlier. I.E., if you want to apply as a senior, you need to have everything submitted by the end of junior year, and you'll be contacted during the summer whether or not you were admitted into the club.

For those of us that are already in BETA, are additional service hours required between years? For example, a Junior has 250 hours at the end of Junior year, will it be necessary to get those extra 50 hours?

Make sure your transcript average does not drop below an 85. NHS and BETA do check.

Im thinking of applying in junior year and I have the hours but is the average cutoff of 85 a definite? What if I seriously have 84.78 and all the intention to bring it up over 85 during the year? :(

Esong, do you have to have all the hours ready by the application deadline, or can you get them during the year?

I bet you need to have all the required hours by the time you submit your application, otherwise you aren't eligible to apply. Its the same as if you don't have an 85 average, you don't meet the requirements, so you don't get in.

I know NHS has ways of tracking down the transcripts and averages of their applicants, but I don't know if BETA has the same sway over the program office to get that informatio. Obviously, I am not one to answer this question, so Esong will have to come on later and clarify. To be safe, I would try to find your transcript.

If you do not have your transcript handy, I can check it on my own. Don't worry about it.

As for the hours... as nothing is set in stone, the BETA club will require that you have your hours completed before the applications are due. However, if you need to work for, say, another two weeks to fill up the last 20 hours or something, I'm sure we can come to terms. PM me for such individual cases.

The website will be completely up to date by mid-september, and although not much has changed for admission into the club, I'll make a formal post when the website is ready.
