Well, apparently I appear to be caving in to (positive) peer pressure.
My friends are urging me to join NHS next year (I meet requirements, I have 9* required hours), but is it really worth it since I'm a junior now? Will it really get me anything from going?
And furthermore will they let me work on the NHS site? That's really the only reason I would want to join at all.
NHS - Is it worth it?

Joining a club just because your friends think you should and you'll probably have fun with them isn't a bad reason to join a club. On top of that its NHS, so its not like this club will not make you look any worse or anything. I don't see a reason not to join. One downside (possibly) is your required to do various activities for the school (alumni day, freshmen orientation, etc) and if you don't like those events, then there might be a problem.
But otherwise, there's no harm in applying.

It's much easier being politically incorrect.

so i felt that NHS was pointless for a while, especially that none of the stuff we had to do was that interesting to me.... but it's not that big of a time commitment, only a couple of weekends through the entire school year. i'd advice to join a committee that really sounds like something you like and not jsut anything- there is a webmaster position that you can do, it seemed to not be very popular when i was in NHS but don't know about now, but you can definately express interest!

I am not afraid of committing time to the club; that's not a problem. I just really want to help in the one field I can, since the NHS website from a programmer's standpoint is a little...depressing.
And since this is one of the more respected parts of the school, it should have a website to match.
The only problem is that I'm not in NHS now, so I don't think I can even apply to the webmaster position next year; I would have already graduated. Is there a chance that next year when I join I might be able to talk to the leadership and see if I can still apply for/get the position in the beginning of the year? Or is that my imagination running around my happy place?

Sorry if this offends anyone, but you can probably agree that professional sites don't require the webmaster to constantly change the pages around (as it is now: file extensions are .html) - they rather have a "backend" (admin portion), where any part of the site can be changed. (file extensions will be that of a programming language, such as .php, .asp, or .jsp)

I suggest that you speak to Stephen Supoyo, the current NHS webmaster. Good computer expertise is hard to come by, which is hard to believe for a school that is supposed to oriented towards Technology. You might have a shot.
I understand your point about how nobody does raw HTML coding anymore. It is just plain stupid to do so. Even we use a content management system based on php (Mambo) because of its flexibility and how organized it is.

thread moved to the NHS forum.
Okay well, first thing first- I am a senior in NHS. I joined as a junior.
The thing with the website was like last year, there was none. Cuz the year before, the guy who made it didn't wanna share it w/ NHS...so he took it w/ him. and last year's webmaster apparently didn't feel the need to do much about it. This year, Stephen built the site, and though it's not constantly updated or the fanciest thing in the world...it's a whole lot better than nothing. And considering how he has a lot to do outside of school that's quite frankly not computer related, I'd say he did a freaking awesome job.
Now...whether to join or not? If you're not the type who enjoys helping others and running around the school building, don't waste your time w/ NHS. seriously. I hate people who join for stupid reasons (no offense) and then complain about how things are boring and they don't want to attend events and meetings and yadda yadda
I went thru freshman and sophomore year hating this school, but after NHS & the Social Science Research major, I can earnestly say I had a newfound love for the building.
As for the website and if you can do anything with it next year...it'll probably depend on the administation and ..the website itself and whether or not more than one person can get access..and all that fun stuff. If you're interested, do speak to Stephen. He can be hunted down from room 1w9.

Mambo is nice, but they overdid it a bit, they tried to make PHP a completely object oriented language...it was never meant to be one. (If you put it on a slower type webserver [like a Celeron], then you will get ~ 12s page generation time: a bit too much)
In either case, I don't mind helping others (as long as I know what I'm talking about), nor do I hate that idea. My obsession with technology is mostly to blame for my questions, I hate the idea that its not used within our school. So anywhere where "BTHS" comes up, and I see a lack of potential, I tend to get very sad
Oh well, I'll talk to Stephen tomorrow, and see what I can find out.

Trust me, you are not the only one. Keep in mind that the school website will be redone by September so there is some hope out there.
