"I never knew
I never knew that everything was falling through
That everyone I knew was waiting on a queue
To turn and run when all I needed was the truth
But that's how it's got to be
It's coming down to nothing more than apathy
I'd rather run the other way than stay and see
The smoke and who's still standing when it clears
Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head"

Why the bookmarks keep disappearing, that's an issue to settle with someone who's more knowledgeable with Firefox. For next time though, take preventative measures by making a backup of your Firefox profile (which also saves your Firefox bookmark among other things)!
Mozbackup is an excellent program to both save AND restore Firefox profiles. I use it myself. Download the program from its official website: http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

Why does technology hates me so much? First my camera, then this.

If bookmarks are the only problem then save yourself some trouble and just use Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer.

Generally, I try to be sparing in the use of Extensions. Because from experience (and there's also a PC World magazine article referencing this), extensions tend to tap into your available memory and it can grow huge. Also, there's that one-off experience where extensions just "break on you" when you make a minor update to Firefox.
It looks like Foxmarks keeps a copy of your bookmarks available in their servers, which can be synchronized with other copies of Firefox. With Mozbackup, you can keep a local copy of Firefox settings. If you have a flash drive, external hard drive or a reliable online file storage site (I add the backup files into a RAR file, encrypt it and split it into 10 meg pieces to bypass the 10 meg limit that my private file storage site places on me), it's all good.

Firefox keeps periodic backups of your bookmarks in your profile directory. See if you can't import the latest backup.

+1. Firefox tends to be slow with more add-ons for me however. My saved data in my program files are never deleted when I needto uninstall.
