I'm just curious if anyone else has fiber coming to their homes. I haven't been able to take a look into it until I got back home from college. I have the cheapest plan and I have been getting close to the advertised 10 Mbps (actual ~9.5 Mbps) down/ 2 Mbps (actual ~1.6 Mbps) up.

This is a hell lot better than Cablevision and their craptastic customer service.

Fios isn't in the brooklyn area yet, but i don't see whats wrong with cablevision(Optimum online), maybe its your area? They advertised 15mbps and my actual is usually around 13-14. My friend who has boost, is supposed to 30mbps for a extra $15 and he gets around 24-27mbps. For the same $65 for fios, you would only get their advertised 20.(all numbers based on speedtest.net)

I live in Marine Park, Brooklyn. They laid down FiOS lines in August and got service activated in late October. My house was one of the first ones to get it.

When I had optimum online, I was getting 5 mbps down most of the time and was paying $50 instead of $30.

I can't get cable in my apartment and right now I have Verizon DSL. I am thinking of getting Verizon FiOS soon.

I'm kinda mad that Verizon hasn't laid fiber yet in our area. I think Time Warner has a stranglehold in this neighborhood, and might be slowing up Verizon. You'd think it'd be easy for them, since Verizon owns all the phones line though. We have DSL, its acceptable. It came with a pretty good wireless router, so can't complain.

Time Warner definitely has its hooks in my neighborhood, even having a set of special deals with the co-op that we live in.

But Verizon just came here with FIOS, and they offered me a better deal than the cable. I haven't checked the speeds yet, but from what I understand the limitation on my speed should now be the wireless connection, and not the internet connection.

It's not Time Warner slowing up FiOS lines. It is just faster for Verizon to lay down lines above ground compared to burying them, which is why they started first in Staten Island (completely) and in Queens (around Bayside and Forest Hills) and then Brooklyn (starting with Marine Park and Canarsie). They'll do the areas that needs lines buried last. Besides, FiOS installation takes about 6 hours because they replace the old copper telephone box and make everything go through fiber.

I have been getting over 10Mbps down on a consistent basis lately. I'm definitely happy.

Well, I know Time Warner has done just about everything they can to stop the rollout of Verizon FiOS TV, I figured that the opposition rolled over into stopping the introduction of FiOS internet in many places.

Yea, I don't have FiOS tv in my area yet and Cablevision has had a role in that. I wouldn't want it anyway. It is much more expensive than DirecTV HD and you get more with DirecTV.

That's not quite how it works. A virus in that sense isn't very large to begin with.

Just did a speed test (speedtest.com) and got 7.8M upload and 1.2 download. Not bad, all things considered.

I think you've might've switched upload and download.

Quite possible. You would be amazed at how easy it is to mix things up at 5:30 AM
