I chose to not make myself depressed and not listen to it. I may watch it on youtube later... maybe.

The one thing I found interesting is that for a man who hated the idea of Middle East peace when he entered office, he is promising Israeli Palestinian peace as the main thing he can do this year. Basically this is because its the only thing he can do without Congress.

Otherwise, the speech made me realize that I really don't agree with the President on anything. On taxes, on spying on people without warrants, on free trade, on education, I can't seem to agree with him on anything. I'm grateful this is his last speech.

I thought the Democratic response was pretty smart, mainly because Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius made the case that Americans are looking to work together to make a new majority. It wasn't very critical of particular policies, the only time Sebelius seemed mad was when discussing National Guard troops used in Iraq. Sebelius was the most critical of the partisan divide, which hearkens towards the rhetoric of the man she's going to endorse today, Senator Obama.

EDIT: I doubt the President memorizes all of the speech, he has the speech written for him in big type (he actually wears glasses) before him, so he takes a few glances down and continues onward. Thats also why the Congress applauds so much, so the President can prepare to say the next line.
It's much easier being politically incorrect.

But he was ready for his next line anyway. The applauses stopped him from speaking at times.

I think the speech was OK and I loved Sebelius's response. She made it seem like there is no democratic, independent or republican party but there was just one America.

The speech did not have anything memorable in it. He pressed for the passage of his stimulus plan, not unusual. He can not do anything big in the Israel/Palestine deal, i think you need at least 10 years with one group of people working on it. If the leadership was serious about settling the conflict, they should make a sub-department in the State Department just working on a deal and also have maybe the UN and other Nations help us. Bush trying to do something because he needs a good legacy and something to boast about in his presidential library and he does not need the approve of Congress.

i dont understand the need for a stimulus package. well at this point its needed but if he hadnt spent so much money with his foreign policy the dollar pay have actually been still strong.

Too bad.

That's only too true, but what's done is done. I can only hope that the future presidents are able to fix the current economy before everything just ups and goes to hell.
