One of my favorite is Men at Work. They have great vocals and the videos are hilarious.

The 80s was pretty weak musically. The only really good albums from the 80s were Moving Pictures by Rush and The Final Cut by Pink Floyd.

A tremendous album from the 1980s was Cyndi Lauper's solo debut album, "She's So Unusual". Most albums have one or two standout songs and the rest are forgettable, but this album had 5 smash hits that are wonderful songs: "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", "Time After Time", "She Bop", "All Through The Night", and "Money Changes Everything". Another great tune is the non-hit "Witness". And the videos of the first three songs mentioned are among the best videos ever made. Try to find them on youtube. She marketed herself brilliantly back then; she played a true "character" that hasn't been replicated by any singer since.
Lauper still releases albums nowadays and she performs concerts. While she still is a great performer, she has never been able to recapture the intitial success that she had with her first album.

I agree those songs are great. Some of them I've heard, some of them I've just youtubed.

Pink, you're right the 80's were sort of weak. I think the 80's as a sort of boring time period. 60s-70s were great.

I loved a lot of the new wave stuff. New Order, The Cure and The Talking Heads (though the last two technically started in the 70's)

The 80's was also decent for Progressive rock with Marillion, Rush (as already mentioned), Asia, Twelfth Night, Pallas and the harder Eloy etc.

Guns N' Roses: One of my favorites

Tom Glavine (he used to pitch for the Mets) always had Sweet Child O' Mine play before his starts.

Glavine; a name I wish to never hear or read again. Along with Schoeneweis.

And the 80s was really a sad decade for music. John Lennon murdered in 1980, John Bonham died in 1980, Harry Chapin killed in a car accident in 1981. Losses from the musical world. :(

Hurt Met fan? I can relate. All I just think about is Seaver having the last throw off the mound to Piazza. Anyway, I better not hijack this thread any further. (Sets a bad example)

So you're not a Gilmour led Floyd fan? I personally thought Momentary Lapse of Reason was amazing too.

I cannot stand AMLOR. The Division Bell, on the other hand, is quite awesome.

Edit: And I can't believe that someone else listens to Eloy. I love Power and the Passion, Dawn, and Ocean, but I've never listened to anything from their 80s catalog.

I LOVE Eloy! Floating and Inside are my two favorite albums by them. Their 80's catalog is decent but I prefer their 70's stuff. They're definitely one of those obscure gems of a band.

Joy Division... I don't know why, I just never got into them, which is strange cause I love New Order. So I guess I just don't like Ian Curtis?

The entire funk era of Red Hot Chili Peppers spanned the '80s, I'm not a big fan of their stuff back then though.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik and onward was awesome though.

Wow, I totally forgot to mention metal. The 80's was great for metal with Metallica, Megadeth, Queensryche, Celtic Frost, Iron Maiden etc.

And Tom Petty pulled out several great albums in the 80's.

stole the words right out of my mouth. the rhcp are a bit underrated in my opinion. I still consider The Power of Equality and Under the Bridge their two best songs, and good thing they were on the same album.
