To: All New Media Students
We wanted to welcome all of you to the major! The upcoming 2 years will be a time of great creative exploration. We expect all of you will find Media to be a welcoming environment where your ideas will be respected and where you will learn how to take your creative impulse to a more advanced level. In preparation for the upcoming year you will have to do a series of summer assignments. As you already know you are enrolled in an AP level Studio course. This course will be demanding of your time and energy during the school year and we will need to “hit the ground running”. The following are projects you should prepare over the summer. The work must be completed to the best of your ability and ready for class critique on the first week of school. Each finished work must be on an 18x24 inch surface or less no larger.
1. Self portrait: any medium
2. A landscape: any medium
3. An observational still-life: any medium
4. A logo design: any medium
5. Illustrate a poem of your choice: any medium

In addition to the 5 complete works a sketchbook must be maintained and should show sketches for the selected projects as well as other observational and imagined drawings. Drawings in the sketchbook should not be “perfect”; the pages should all be filled (not little drawings in the center of a page). All drawings should be finished even if they are not as they had originally been intended. The works in the sketchbook should not be cute, pretty, adorable or trite. The pages should challenge us to think and wonder. Finally each page should be dated when it is finished.
I hope you will all have a great summer and that you will find these summer assignments rewarding to work on. We look forward to meeting all of you in the Fall! Please free to contact any of us if you have questions about the summer work or any thing at all!
sczerniewski@bths.edu, rdepinto@bths.edu, pdepinto@bths.edu
Sincerely,
Ms. Czerniewski, Mr. DePinto, Mrs.DePinto

I really encourage all the incoming junior Media students to do this assignment. I feel that a lot of people will not do this because they think that the teacher wont care or something. This is not true. I talked to the teachers myself. The reason why this summer assignment exists is that there is not enough time during the school year to fully create and finish the portfolio required for AP Studio Art. The teacher wants a head start because she needs all the time she can get. I hope that everybody will do this assignment and if you know someone who will not do it, please tell them to do it. It does not have to be perfect, the main point of this is to have something to critique and use as a basis to improve upon.

I'm pretty sure that this assignment will be collected, graded, or checked. Unless you don't care about your grade, this assignment should be done. (Same for any other over the summer assignments, they're usually checked in some way)

And I vote that whoever doesn't do this gets kicked out of Media. ^_^
I'd gladly do this assignment, 10 times over.
Okay, 5.

Okay, 5.

Your devotion to media impresses me haha. However if they did do that, then about half the major would be kicked out :P
OH go to Tech and talk with the Media guidance counselor/AP and tell them how much you want to get into Media. Maybe someone transferred schools or something and they won't be there next year.

Haha, just more room for me I guess. :P

If there's anything I can do to get into Media, I'll do it. Probably.
Do you know where I can find this Media guidance counselor / AP you speak of?
And when should I go? I'm in summer school, but I doubt anyone would be there... First day of school perhaps?

I SHALL GET INTO MEDIA NO MATTER THE COST! GRAHHH...

You can try to find the Media teachers or just go to your guidance counselor. The AP of Media is the AP of Physics and Technology, Mr. Barclay.

Actually, nevermind. I was listening to "Paperback Writer" by The Beatles while I was drawing the landscape for the Media assignment and I actually started rewording the lyrics to fit my situation, since the song is about a boy who's asking for a book he's written to be read so he can be a paperback writer...

...and yes, I realize how sad that sounds. X_x

@blackmanor1000:
I talked to my guidance counciler SEVERAL times, but even she didn't know what major I would get... But she told me I probably wouldn't get into Media since the seats are all filled for that class, even if the situation I'm in isn't COMPLETELY my fault... Yeah, I do admit that if I had worked harder earlier in the year, I probably wouldn't be in this state of limbo... But still, I never deserved that letter informing me of no major.

@Danielle A:
I didn't get a major... It's a long story... I made a topic about it in the forum titled "No Major".

I finally finished the Media Summer Homework assignments... Even though I have a slim-to-none chance of getting in, I thought I'd share.

Click the title under the drawings if you want a closer look.

~

5. Illustrate a poem of your choice: any medium

Posted Image
Here Comes The Sun
I chose to draw "Here Comes The Sun", a song by The Beatles. I know it's not a poem, but I find a couple of their songs very poetic and I don't really know many poems, so I did the next best thing.

Posted Image
Love Is All You Need
This is an old drawing I did back during Sophomore year on Valentines day, based on another Beatles song, "All You Need Is Love". This is actually an alternate version of my original drawing, but the original might not be appropriate to post here, even though it doesn't really show anything significant. You'll be able to find the original somewhere in my dA gallery.

~

4. A logo design: any medium

Posted Image
KN Logos
These are a bunch of logos I drew based on my initials, "KN". My full name is "Kevin Ng", so I tried playing around with it... As you can see, the results aren't spectacular.

Posted Image
KN Electricity
I made this icon back in Freshman year when I found out how to make .GIFs with Photoshop and ImageReady.

~

3. An observational still-life: any medium

Posted ImagePosted Image
The Cure For Zombie-ism (Photo)
...Yeah...
I don't do still-life that often... Or at all really. I prefer to just work with my imagination, so I have no limits or criteria to follow. As you can see, I'm not good with real stuff.
And when the zombies rise, don't forget to grab your 1Up mushrooms.

~

2. A landscape: any medium

Posted Image
Industrious Isle
I'm sorry I didn't get around to coloring or shading this... I worked on this near the end of summer school and it was already taking a while to do, so I decided to just end it at the outlining so I could get to the other drawings. I'm pretty sure this is my first landscape drawing I've drawn without a character and drawn seriously.
This doesn't look as great as I'd imagine it to be, seeing as how it's colorless and shadowless, but this whole city block is supposed to be in the ocean, with the left side being the night sky and the moon down the road while the right side is the day with the sun down the road.

~

1. Self portrait: any medium

Posted Image
Tranquility
I started on Monday by taking a photo of myself (not shown because I'm actually wearing pajamas in the photo), then I started sketching my body position on my sketchbook... Then I avoided drawing it for a few days because it started to feel like actual work... Then I continued drawing it tonight and finished it a couple minutes ago. The fantastical features of this drawing were kind of improvised, I originally wanted me to just be sitting in a chair, but then I thought that'd be a little too boring... So yeah.

Posted Image
Fade
I drew this during Sophomore year... I forgot when, probably late winter or during the spring. This is the full drawing of the cropped icon I use for this forum and several other websites.

~

So yeah, that's my work. I really want to be in Media. And it's really late. I don't know why I'm still up. I've been thinking about sending these drawings to the Media teachers along with a heart-filled email, but I'm not sure... That probably wouldn't even do anything and it might just be overkill... But... Bleh, I don't know.
