Thanks guys! It would mean the world to me if I got into Media... I'm not a big fan of this school and I haven't had much school pride, but if I got in, I'd be proud to say I go to Tech... But I know I should prepare myself for some bad news... Do you guys think I should send the Media teachers an email? I don't know if that will do anything, though...

To be honest, they aren't really the first time I've drawn landscapes and still-life, it's just the first time I've been serious about drawing them. I've doodled some building perspectives and some things I see around the classroom in the margin of my notes or on any piece of paper I can find during class (hence the name "DoodleKid"), but this is the first time I'm using a full, empty, blank piece of paper to draw a landscape/still-life.

I've never really taken art classes. In middle school, I was put in this art class, but I already knew everything they were teaching. In Freshman year, I had an idea of how to do perspective, but DDP helped out with that, along with teaching me how to use T-squares and triangles. In Sophomore year, I'm pretty sure the only new thing I learned to draw were floor plans.
I've mostly learned how to draw by just doodling on my own, looking at other art, getting some harsh critiques, and skimming through the occasional how-to book.

And lol, I'm not sure if I'm qualified to make logos BTHSnews or the Student Government... I go to the art club and although most of the people there are only there for the credits, there are some pretty amazing artists in the club... Far better than me in most cases.

If I ever want to create a successful comic series, I'm gonna need to get better. Visuals and story writing. Two things that Media offers. :) And I wouldn't mind learning how to make a website to post my future comic on.

DoodleKid, very good job. You can look into designing the senior planner. BTHSnews need a designer, you can come by the meeting and see what is needed and if you are interested.

I think you should try coming to school and speaking to Mr. Hoftyzer and/or Mr. Asher. However according to this http://www.bths.edu/ourpages/auto/2009/4/2....pdf?rn=7581133 ...its class of 2011, not 2012 - there was a misprint. There are no seats available in Media. Only Civil and Environmental have seats open.

I know about that data... I found it a while back when I first found out I didn't get a major... But I just can't accept it, I can't accept Civil unless I've exhausted every option and any hope I have of getting into Media... Even if this all ends up doing nothing.

I personally think I should be in Media instead of that person who got the last seat. Whoever that was chose it as their 11th choice and, according to the data, was the third to last person to get a major out of 1078 students. My ranking was 931. I guess my logic here is flawed in a few ways, but... It still doesn't seem fair that someone who also had bad grades and who probably didn't want to be in Media is in there instead of me.

The only reason I wasn't given a major was because of some mistake. I know, if I had worked harder to get better grades I wouldn't be in this mess, but in the end, I finished all my failed classes over the summer and now I need a major. If time was taken to confirm whether or not there would be summer school for those of us who've failed, I might have gotten a major, maybe even Media, instead of being told I would retake my failed classes instead of a major for Junior year, which ended up not being the case.

And I'm not sure if Mr. Asher can do anything for me. In my "No Major" topic, he only gave me an explanation of why some students weren't given majors.

Honestly... I don't care about what happens with this major situation if getting into Media is absolutely, completely, and definitely, no longer an option.

Then again...architecture has 35 in their section which is peculiar because each section usually holds 34 students.

I understand the logic not offering a major to struggling students, but many students pick tech knowingly that they will be placed into a major for Junior and Senior Years. It's disappointing...BUT HEY! you have 2 less classes =P

Wow, I thought I knew you from somewhere. The goal of creating a comic book, the style of the artwork, the name (of course); it all comes together perfectly. Even if you don't advance into the media major; there is an abundance of other outlets to expand your creativity (other than the art club ofcourse, if it's not working for me it's probably more melancholic through your viewpoint). A few examples would have to be joining the art section in Horizons (very talented and knowledgeable, however a bit awkward), or take part in some of the graphic novel/ media competitions posted during the school year. I believe you can find these anouncements on the 5th floor around the english department or through a teacher. They span much farther then our school and adventitiously provide monetary or other varieties of prizes. I myself have never entered the artistic events, but was informed of such events from some teachers. i think you should go for it, the media major shouldn't be your only outlet. That is of course if you really have the determination to follow through.
You can't expect to do everything, but there is everything to be expected.

Oh no, my secret identity has been discovered. :P
I think I found out who you were a while ago, and sorry about the umbrella, never meant for it to get permanently lost in that trash can. Just wanted it to gently land on the top layer of trays... Didn't think it'd sink to the bottom.

I guess I want to get into Media so badly because it offers everything I've ever wanted to learn about art, all in one little class. I hate the fact that I'd be left out while another group of people would be advancing in their art skills.
And I also want to be in it for the grade. My grades are horrible because I both hate and suck at Math. I'm interested in, but not all that good at fully understanding, Science. I'm lazy when it comes to dissecting books I don't want to read and writing essays I don't want to write, so English isn't my best subject either. I'm bad at any language other than English and I'm horrible at remembering dates and specific events. Media gives me something I'm interested in and good at.

I guess I should prepare myself for the worst, since the worst is also the most likely. Even though this'll be my third year in this school, I barely know anything about it, mostly because I've been so eager to get away from it as soon as possible. I'll try to look for some other art groups in Tech that I can both learn from and contribute to.

And I've gotta say, art club isn't the only club I've found melancholic. I stopped going to the anime club because it was noisy and hectic, and one day this guy accidentally punched me in the face and didn't even notice! Art club's also pretty unstable, but not nearly as bad as the anime club... Although the art club does tend to be... Well not be, but try to be, over controlling. Just telling us to draw stuff for someone/something and not doing much else.

DoodleKid, it never hurts to try. You will need to speak to a lot of people. The AP(dont know what department), the main teacher, programing, your counselor, the AP of Guidance, and maybe Mr Asher.

I'm still very determined to do whatever I can to get into Media, but I honestly don't know what else I can do or who I should speak with.

I've spoken to my guidance councilor many, many times after I saw I didn't get a major at all, let alone Media. She says it's unlikely that I'll get in since the seats are filled, and that I'd probably have to settle for Civil.
I've sent a long, heart-filled email to the 3 Media teachers listed here with an explanation of my situation, but I haven't gotten a reply.
I've made many posts here on the forum for answers. I've gotten a lot of support and a reply from Mr. Asher about why some students didn't get a major, but not a direct solution to this painful problem.

Even though this is going to be my Junior year, I still don't know much about Tech. I've been so full of school hate for the past 2 years, I've done my best to keep everything about it at arm's length. And now that I've found something about it I love, I don't have the information or resources to get to it.

...er...
I guess I'm basically asking you to be more specific. ^_^ An explanation you'd give to a Freshman, because I probably only know a little more about Tech than they do.

@DoodleKid: I like your work, especially your landscape (considering it's one of your first tries, the perspective came out well) and your still-life :) As a tip for future reference, http://www.smackjeeves.com/ is a site that hosts webcomics ^_^

If you're really serious about becoming a graphic novelist for a career, I highly suggest you take art classes and learn anatomy. My cousin goes to an art high school and tells me that MARVEL (and I suppose other comic publishers) only hire people who know how to draw anatomically.

Thankie and thankie.

To be honest, I'm still not quite sure what kind of career I want... All I know for sure is that I want to do something art-related and I wouldn't mind being a comic artist. Working for Marvel would be pretty cool, but I don't know...
I'd like the freedom to make my own stories, so I might just make my own website and make my own web comic series, although learning about websites and being successful at making a web series among thousands of other web series' is... not that easy.

I guess I'll keep working on my art and just see where life pulls me.
