This year some people weren't given majors and I was one of those people. It was apparently because I had failed my Health class and was on the verge of failing several other classes. I was told I would take these classes in my Junior year and that they would take the place of the major period.

When major selections first began, I learned that everyone would get a major, but what major we got would depend on what we selected and what our grades were. I later learned that if we were failing, we were apparently forfeiting our majors.

When I was told I would take my failed classes in my Junior year instead of a major, I asked why I couldn't take the classes in summer school. My counciler said there wouldn't be summer school for Sophomores. A while later, my counciler told me that there would be summer school for Sophomores and that I would be able to take it instead of having to take my failed classes in Junior year. When I asked what my schedule would be like next year, she said she wasn't sure.

So now we're here. I definitely don't plan on failing summer school, so what's going to happen with my schedule for Junior year?

Is it at all possible that I would get into the Media major? Art is my life and I'd give anything, minus my left hand and my head, to get into Media.
Will I just be dumped into whatever major still has open seats?
Or will I not get a major at all? And if so, what will happen?

I haven't heard of anyone with no major whatsoever.
Try calling up the school or e-mailing Mr. Asher about it.
Most likely you'll have to go to summer school and then you'll be put into whatever major has open seats left.
Best of luck to you, and I hope that this issue gets resolved.

I wish I didn't have to go through this... Misunderstanding? Since I'll be taking summer school for my failed classes, I just feel like I should've gotten a major to begin with... And I really feel like it should've been Media.

My ranking was in the 900s, but according to the major placement data (which I assume has a typo which should be "2011" instead of "2012"), the last seat for Media went to someone who chose it as their 11th choice.

It's just killing me knowing someone who doesn't even sound like they want to be in Media is in instead of me. And somehow I doubt he had a better ranking than me if it was his 11th choice... But if he did, I'd understand. Just not knowing is killing me...

I know a lot of people who got into media, and it wasn't even in their top 3-5 choices.
From the looks of the major summary, only environmental and civil engineering have seats left.
Maybe they'll be able to fit you into media if you explain your situation though.
Good luck, keep us updated.

Yeah, I've heard Media wasn't that popular, but after our majors were announced, I kept on hearing so many people in the hallways talking about how they loved the fact that they got into Media. Maybe I was just hearing things...

I really do hope they'd somehow put me into Media, but I can't help thinking they won't. It just seems like dumping me into whichever major is open would be the easier thing to do. Maybe not the right thing... But easier. Or maybe it is the right thing... I did fail 2 classes...

Media is quite the popular major. The school decided to accept 4 classes(of people) of Media for the incoming juniors. There were only two classes this year. Apparently there is this rumor that Media is really easy but thats not true as it forces you to think up of creative solutions.

Media's a pretty interesting major in my opinion. I would've applied for it if they didn't have the AP Studio Art 2D course. (Which I would've crashed and burned on)
To OP - 900s would've still gotten you into Media btw.

@BassOmegaX:
Conveying a message, story, or anything really, is never easy to do through any form of art, whether it be drawing, photography, filmmaking, animation, etc.
It pisses me off when I hear people laughing about how Media's going to be easy for them... Like they hardly care at all about the quality of their art. That is... If they care about art at all.

@SolR:
Aughhh, I'd LOVE to be in AP Stuido Art!
And even if my rank would've gotten me in, the major is already full. I don't know if they'd make another seat just for me. They definitely wouldn't kick someone out for me.

well if that's the case i would create a portfolio, find the media teacher and beg him to get you in.
im sure if you have a impressive portfolio he'll take on an extra student.

It has nothing to do with taking another student. The maximum for each class is 34 students as per teacher union contract or DOE ( I forgot). However, I am sure we have at least 1 major that has an extra spot. It may not be media. But there is definitely one with an extra.

NickC's right, once a major is filled, there's little to nothing I can do to get in.
According to the placement data, Environmental and Civil are the only ones left.
I'm not very interested in Civil at all and although I am somewhat interested in Environmental, it's not really where my heart is, but it seems like I'll have to settle for what's left...

You could always take art classes in college, as you do not need to continue your BT major in college.

Yeah, I guess...
I'm not a big fan of this school, the only reason I chose to go here was because I got in with the SHSAT and the schools I would've gotten into based purely off my middle school grades weren't that great.
So far, my 2 years here has been... Less than great. When I went to the major presentation night and saw what Media was all about, I stayed in that room all night. I left once to check out the ID presentation, which I didn't find appealing at all. All the art, the drawings, the short films... It was like finding a gold nugget in the pile of ... I threw myself into.

This is the first that i heard that some one did not have a major. If you pass Summer School, if it exists, you might get placed based on how the school wants to place you, or have no major for you(in that case you can only get Advanced or Normal Regents Diploma).

This is crazy, one of the hallmarks of this school is the major system.

Yeah, I heard this year was the first year they tried this new ranking system...

Heh, if it was still the first come, first serve system, I'm sure I would've gotten into Media. I was hanging around the school website, looking over the description of Media almost every night after the major presentation thing.

No the ranking system was first used with the class of 2009, the graduated seniors.

I only know that they touched up a few majors and slip Bio-Med.

...but really? You've never heard of anyone not getting a major? Huh, I think I feel a small hint of humiliation...

No, all my classmates, smart and not, were placed into a major as per the system before. As i understand, DoodleKid, you had a major but the school dropped it. This is something new, which does not say anything about me.

Yeah, I think the idea was pretty last minute, since at the major presentations I recall hearing Mr. Asher say all students would be sorted into a major...
