I'm thinking about buying a digital camera online at amazon.com. I don't know much about digital cameras, and I'm hoping that there are a few people here who have purchased a digital camera or two. I'm looking for a camera with a price range around $200-$300, with features like optical zoom and the ability to make pictures black and white instead of color. Does anyone know of any good deals or have any suggestions as to what cameras I should consider?

Any help is much appreciated. :)

1. Don't go for the Gateway.
2. Don't buy it at amazon, they rip you off.

All digital cameras basically have the B&W, Sephia, and all those fancy modes.

The Canon Powershot A75 should suit you.

My cousin is an expert wen it comes to cameras. When I asked her what type of camera I should get, she recommended kodak. Some model... o, I forgot, but it's in the neighborhood of 6oo to 7oo bucks.

That is way too much. It is probably a 5-6 megapixel camera. For RookieReporter's needs, a 3-4 megapixel camera would do.

I'm looking for something a little lighter, more pocket-sized. The Cannon has that seemingly unnecessary cylindrical protrusion.

Any suggestions?

I recently used the Canon A70, the direct predecessor of the A75. They both use 4-AA batteries. That protrusion is where one of the batteries is.

BTW, does anyone know of a camera in the $400-500 range that not only takes excellent pictures, but also can shoot movies until there is no memory left? The A70 was annoying in the respect that it could only shoot 30 second clips.

If you have a big enough memory card, it should work. I saw one in a magazine a while back called T3, it was 4 GB.

You can also buy an MP3 player and one of those you got yaself an Ipod mini.

Not true, most cameras only allow mini movies. My Powershot S50 takes a 2.5 min. minimovie max. A digital camera is mainly meant for still shots. Go for a digital camcorder instead.

ZoSo, you might consider looking at Minolta if you want compact sized cameras like the Dimage F100

Back to topic, it says on these sites that Minolta/small cameras are hard to get a good image with because the shaking/unsteadiness of your holding it affects small cameras more. Is that true?

It is true if you don't know how to handle a extremely compact camera. This goes for any compact camera.

try bestbuy. It's usually cheaper there. If your picky about the graphics or the way it comes out get one above 4.o pixels. 3.0-4.0 is average and below 3 is just not that good.
