Microsoft is planning on creating a multi IM client of that sort. For now, there is Trillian. I hate the way Trillian is designed though. You can find out about it by clicking on the following link...

I don't like Trillian either. It feels bloated to me.
Anyway, you might like these:
1)Miranda IM
2)Gaim

I tried Gaim, it's pretty good. However, Miranda IM looks much, much more feature-packed. Particularly, the number of plugins and customization files is amazing. And best of all, both of these are open source. :D

I didn't like Miranda IM it was quite messy imho. But gaim... =D

I use something called AdiumX (for the mac) which uses gaim underneath. And while it hasn't even left alpha stages yet it still kicks the dren out of every other client out there. :-p

Speaking of Trillian...does anyone know why there are 5 unlabeled check boxes next to font selection in the prefs?

As of now, what I select as my incoming font makes everyones font looke likt that. Do I need to click some/all of those for that to not happen?

Also, how do you not have the buddy list not ontop of all of my other windows? It's driving my nuts.

ICQ isnt a universal instant messaging program. A universal program ties together multiple IM programs into one. Basically it removes the need to have seperate instant messaging programs if you use more than one.

You might want to try out Gaim; its definitely worth checking out.

Gaim has that problem where it shrinks your font down by 70%...and I like to use a size 8 font, so it makes everything I'm typing really hard to read.

Gaim doesnt shrink my font down, if anythign can't you just edit it. I like Gaim the most it seems the most compact and to the point one.

Yes it does, Frightcrawler took screenshots comparing the input and output of text: http://frightcrawler...images/gaim.bmp

And I don't know how to edit programs.

Well........ damn you fright crawler!! so then just make your gaim font bigger, i think gaim was written for gnu linux first then ported to windows, maybe it didnt go smoothly. btw editing binary code is harder then writing uncompiled code... for me atleast.

Umm.. well for everybody too.

Its been a long time since they started gaim, but they pride them selves in being cross platform. They're currently working on "libgaim" where they're going to move all the gui code away from the connection code so it can be used in any program. The stuff you're having issues with seems to be gui related.

You'll have to blame the windows maintainer for that one. ;-)

All things aside, having a build on almost every system out there that works is quite impressive.

:P
Unfortunately, that doesnt change much. Plus, the larger you make your font in Gaim, the more garguantuan it will look in AIM.

Yeah, it was written for Linux first, then ported. Kind of like The Gimp. I have to say though, The Gimp is ported much better than Gaim was. And this isnt even considering that The Gimp is more advanced than Gaim..

In case anyone doesn't know, The Gimp is an open source painting program. It stands up pretty well to Photoshop, and is free too (in more ways than one). I feel bad for Paint Shop Pro, though. The Gimp is pretty much equal or better than it in many ways.

Edit: Sorry, linked to thegimp.org instead of gimp.org

Most of the people here use software with the MPL license (Mozilla Public License) by using....er, a Mozilla browser.
