Anyway, try Risque's suggestion, and if that doesn't work I'd recommend a reformat. If THAT doesn't work then it is probably an issue with one of your components, e.g. RAM.

I would try getting an adapter like this: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16812156014
You can pop out your hard drive and plug it into another machine and see if it pop ups or even spins. Note that this adapter is for SATA hard drives not IDE. You need a different adapter for IDE drives.

I've recently reformatted my computer, so i can walk you through this. On Vista you have to insert your OS disk, or whatever they call it. This would be the disk that says Windows Vista .... Reinstallation DVD. You insert that, make sure the computer can read it. Then restart the computer. From here there can be many different steps, some ask you right away if you want to boot form disk or not, others have to press F12 or something. If you do have to press F12 or some other key, you'll have to do it before the load screen comes up. After this its pretty self explanatory.
If you do decide to reformat your computer, i would create partitions. So that if you do decide to reformat your computer you'll only need to delete a partition that you think is causing the problems.
I'm pretty sure you can call some kinda service to get your reinstallation disk back.

Just to come full circle, can you say again what the laptop can and can't do? Can you see anything at all at any point?

From what i can tell its crashing before it even starts. So i would think he should reboot. Best is to ask a professional, or take it to the store.

I don't think you'd have to replace a hard drive unless you physically destroy it.

That's not true. Hard drives typically have a lifetime for 3-4 years depending on usage. They will fail eventually. I work as IT support at my university.

Oh, well i would consider age as a physical damage. But yeah i suppose hard drives aren't destroyed just from beating it physically.
