It's basically the same as setting up gmail as IMAP. https://mail.google....py?answer=77702

But make sure the username is YOURUSERNAME@bths.edu

O thanks, thought it had something to do with IMAP, couldn't figure out the host though :)

I suggest you set it up with Exchange and not IMAP; the emails will be pushed to your phone like text messages as they arrive, as opposed to having your phone constantly connect to the server, which uses more battery.

I'm assuming Mr. Edwards has Sync enabled for the bths.edu domain. If not let me know here, I'll ask him to do it.

I forgot that gmail added exchange support. Exchange is definitely better.

We set up gmail and bths.edu accounts as IMAP from iphones here (using smtp.gmail.com for bths.edu since it's gmail underneath I seem to recall). We also have push enabled and checks every 15 minutes. Can get through the day this way even though I agree iphone battery has much to be desired.

We don't have text message on our iphones though. In that case, how is the exchange thing better or worse?

You don't need texts on your iphone for exchange. Josh just meant that the exchange protocol acts like texts. It looks just like the IMAP set up except your iphone is not checking the server every 15 minutes or so. The server just "pushes" the messages through whenever there is one.

Ok, thanks. Think I might set up a dummy account and play with it for now since although I'm fine with the checking every 15 minutes (24/7 email can sometimes be as much annoying/distraction as a blessing) this sounds like it could be useful in a number of cases.

In the known limitations for the sync it mentions " Limited Contact Information. The iPhone can synchronize up to 3 email address. Phone number synchronization is limited to 2 Home numbers, 1 Home Fax, 1 Mobile, 1 Pager, 3 Work (one will be labeled 'Company Main') and one Work Fax number." What does it mean to sync to non-email addresses?

I think it's referring to each one of your gmail contacts. If you go to gmail and click on contacts, you'll have a list of your contacts. Most users don't realize that one can append phone numbers to those contacts. The limitation of Google Sync is that it can't sync all the phone numbers. For example, if you have three home numbers for a particular contact, it'll only synchronize two of them. I doubt this limitation would pose an issue for you.

Another important note before using google sync, make sure your existing contacts are backed up on iTunes. There might be some monkeying around necessary with the itunes syncing and google contacts syncing. I'm not entirely familiar with the process because I'm not an iPhone user.

Oh, and so re a normal gmail account, does that sync by default in the way being described above if set up as an exchange account?

--------------
Also, here's another thought: Is there anyway to get the Tech calendar on bths.edu to automatically download into (or in some way be converted so that it can be incorporated to) the iphone calendar?

Ok, I got an account set up and apparently it works as described. Nice. However, when I went to set up with another account, iphone says "Only one Exchange ActiveSync account can be configured." So I'm not sure what the google reference to 3 is about, unless it has changed since. Anyway, I set up an already existing IMAP account this way so I guess I'll disable the IMAP version of it so something subtle/funny does not happen with two accounts points at the same thing, and I guess can flip between then depending upon whether I want to get those messages right away or not.

BTW, Google Sync on your mobile phone mentions "As with any service using push technology, Google Sync may cause increased usage of your device's battery."

So, I don't know what to make of this. I guess if there is no message you benefit because it does not poll the server, but if you get lots of them, it could end up being more. ??? I don't know.

That's basically it. Generally speaking, it ends up being less battery usage. As for your other questions, I'm not knowledgeable enough to give a straight answer.

Indeed. But what's the point of any technology then? If additionally it can do right into the calendar app, or the mail app, or etc. and be reminded of it/see it/etc, why not?

If you ever get tired of receiving endless e-mails and continuous encroachment of personal time (like I do), then that's exactly what you do - check only on an as-needed basis.

(Still don't understand how guys with Blackberry or iPhone can stand it)
