I haven't used IE in...ages. Actually, ever. But all of my spyware/adware related popups come in on IE windows.

And I've had enough of it. Is it safe to delete IE? Will any aspect of Windows not function properly without it? Is there a way to just disable it?

Popup

There's one of them. It's a very !@#$py popup also.

IE can be deleted but it would be really tough to do since it is so embedded in Windows Xp. Everytime you use Windows Explorer or open My Computer, it is actually IE that you are using. I would definitely not recommend deleting IE instead consider reformatting your harddrive or if you are too lazy, have Zonealarm not allow IE to access the internet. That should solve your problem

It's not bad...just very annoying.

Will doing that (ZoneAlarm thingy) prevent Windows Update from working?

Blocking IE in ZA will prevent windows update from working. But that's not a problem because you can just enable it when you want to update.

Deleting IE will probably cause conflicts with certain applications or webpages (you know, those annoying pages that don't display correctly in Mozilla/use ActiveX),

If you still want to uninstall IE, you can read about it here. How to Uninstall IE

Maybe uninstalling/reinstalling IE will fix the problem as well.

Because Mozilla includes the mail program, Firefox is only the browser.

i wouldnt do it, you need those updates.
"Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow creeps into this petty pace from day to day, to the last syllable of recorded time. And all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death. Out out brief candle! Life is but a walking shadow, it is a poor player who struts and frets his hour on stage and then is heard no more, it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

IE is full of bugs, It was made( and by made i mean bought) to obliterate the netscape browser in microsoft's attempt to "rule" the internet. Fortunatly there are alternatives, my favorite is mozilla firefox great pop up blocker. Unfortuantly you can't uninstall IE from what i see because its windows explorer as well.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Find the "Add/Remove Windows Components" tab ont he left. and uncheck IE. Then finish it. I've removed it. Everything works fine.
