I know I'm late to the discussion, but if money is no object (or to put it correctly, if you can afford the cost), take the portfolio exam. Remember that there is no rule that you must report any AP scores, and in most cases, most college applicants don't. This is because CollegeBoard doesn't discount it like they do for the SAT, and they are essentially meaningless to the application process UNLESS you have taken a lot of AP Classes (if you are an AP scholar, then you might want to send the scores).

My point is that in this case, if you perform poorly on the Studio portfolio, you can keep it quiet. If you manage to rock the portfolio and get a 4 or a 5, you can then brag about it on your application. Because you did not take the Studio class, only you need to know that you took the Studio portfolio exam, and you can make the decision with little ill repercussions.

I agree with tycoon, but in my opinion only do the portfolio(which is extremely time consuming) if it won't affect your SAT studying/grades.

I was told I need to talk to Mr.Barclay about opening an account on CollegeBoard to do the submissions... Does anyone know where I can find him after 9th period tomorrow?

Try his office. It's like 2e15 or something

But isn't the point of school to educate children for a better future? How is keeping them from taking classes they can actually use and giving those spots to kids who won't use the knowledge logical at all?

This is HIGH SCHOOL. Most people don't get the opportunities that you have at the moment, much less the ones that you missed.

And if you really are an artist, you will take whatever you can get from ANYTHING that you are exposed to and use it for your artwork. Do you really think that there is nothing that you can get from Civil that you can incorporate into your art?

I know for a fact I'm going to have a career in the art field. Whether it's as a comic artist who draws worlds you won't want to leave or as a hobo drawing for a couple pennies, I'm going to do something art-related.

No, you THINK at age 16 or 17 that you will have a career in the art field.

And you very well might.

But you might find an entirely different path for yourself in the next decade. There is truly no way of knowing where your life will lead.

I am not, at all, going to be an engineer. Let's get that clear. I'd rather choose being an art hobo over civil engineering.

Probably true. But again, you never know...

The option to switch shouldn't be given to students who just don't want to do work. It should be given to people who are determined to better themselves in that environment. Maybe giving them some kind of transfer-test on the major to see if they really want to be in it, I don't know. Rewarding a dumb student with even more lack of knowledge doesn't make any sense to me at all. I guess it's 'cause of my grades.

It is not 'rewarding' the dumb student, it is rewarding the student who strives harder with their choice.

Your Tech major will not determine your life. You will do that, with what you do with the opportunities that you have.

You can spend the next year and a half moaning about Civil Engineering, or you can use your skills to make it easier for you, and find out what is in Engineering that can improve your art.

Aesthetically pleasing and mathematically sound go together very well. Learn what you can, and then go on to do whatever you can do.

...And to all the quotes, can we just drop the whole fxcking transfer subject? I started this topic mainly for advice on the top portion of my post. I only included the last paragraph because I didn't understand how keeping people from learning about things they wanted to learn didn't make people think the whole damn system was broken and because I still have plenty of built up anger towards this whole freaking major problem. I get it. It's my fault. I get told that every freaking time I bring this up and I even tell it to myself, but I'm pretty sick and tired of having that statement beaten and burned into my brain because it already has been for plenty of other things. I'm sorry for even mentioning it again, so please, let's just leave it alone.

Thank you, and proceed with the incredibly long and awkward silence that will follow this post.

Sorry for bumping but I was told that although APs aren't credited at many colleges because they want you to take THEIR course, they are still beneficial because they see that are you interested. And Doodlekid, there are feewaivers for AP (I think they're once per exam type) and it mostly depends on how much you pay for lunch so I think if you decide to make the portfolio and send it in, you're not really loosing out on much.

Beware of the generalized statement. Not only did my school award me credit for all of the AP exams I took, my school explicity denies students who have earned AP credit from retaking or auditing the same course. Colleges may treat the exam credit differently, some may still require you to take introductory level courses, some may allow you to advance, as long as you meet their grade requirement, 9 times out of 10 your school will award you some credit for the exam.

In this situation, as I said above, its about trying to get a bragging right and beefing up Doodlekid's application for art schhol.
It's much easier being politically incorrect.
