. Detention Policy – Mr. Newman
1. There is nothing in writing right now
a. Once an official document is written, it will be email blasted to the entire school community (students, teachers and parents)
2. Cutting is more than out of control and the administration can do something about it
3. This policy will deter some students, but not all of them
4. Currently, the deans and security can give a form of detention but it is not widely used
5. There is a Saturday detention for disciplinary reasons from 9:00AM – 1:00PM
a. This has been in place since last spring
b. This is an alternative to suspension
6. If students were given a punishment in which they have to complete a miscellaneous task, the student’s parents would have to sign off on it
7. Bronx Science has daily detention
a. They use an automated system in which students swipe in and out of detention
8. There will be detention on Tuesdays and Thursdays
a. Students will find out Monday and then have Tuesday to clear the detention, if it is inaccurate
i. 1 day is not enough to verify attendance or settle the situation
i. 1 month is too much time
ii. 2 weeks would be a better amount of time
b. Infirmary already sends the information down of people who were excused from class or left school early
c. The deans’ schedules will be moved around so that they can oversee detention
i. This will not cost the school any money
9. Most students are in favor of the system
10. The time that was missed in class will be made up in detention
a. If you miss x number of classes, you make up for that x number in detention
11. The goal is to decrease the number of classes cut
a. If this system does not work, then we can remove it
12. Possibly use the auditorium or the library for students to serve detention
13. If we use Daedalus to see the students who cut, there will be mistakes in the system
a. Teachers would alert the deans’ office to report students who are cutting and set them up for detention
i. The teachers will be respected
ii. If a student is caught in the hallways cutting class, then they will automatically be given detention
iii. Daedalus will be used to verify a cut
iv. This is the favored policy and will be re-presented to Mr. Asher
b. We don’t want to use a misleading system that can be inaccurate (Daedalus)
c. No official start date has been discussed with Mr. Asher
14. The number of cuts have been consistent
a. It is higher on Fridays, during the later periods
15. Students need at least a month’s time to adjust to the idea of this policy
a. The policy will be more effective and efficient
b. There will be less rebellion if the students know beforehand
16. If there are any problems with this policy, the administration will try to solve them so that they won’t occur again
17. It’s more rational to start any policy at the beginning of the school year
a. If this is implemented now, then the attitude of students toward the administration will be lower
i. Respect between the students and the administration in this school has been improving over the last few years, according to the Learning Environment Survey
18. Any policy will face problems in the beginning
19. Many students feel that this a punishment, rather than a solution to a problem
20. A lateness would not be considered a cut
21. Suspending students who cut detention does not make sense
a. You are telling students not to go to class because they cut a class
b. Excessive cutting is a guidance issue
c. Out-of-house suspensions are very rare
i. Students are only considered for out-of-house suspension if they have more than 3 in-house suspensions
d. Suspension is a case-by-case issue
22. This policy is about changing students’ behavior and getting them to go to class
23. Students will be notified if they are scheduled for detention via email and a phone call home
a. Ultimately, the deans’ office will somehow notify the students personally
24. Students could possibly be lectured about cutting class while they serve detention
25. Detention would be unproductive if students are only sitting there
a. They would be allowed to take out some kind of work during detention
26. Detention is only 45 minutes on Tuesdays and Thursdays (1 session on each day)
a. Students will not stay any longer than 1 session for detention
b. Each cut will be made up
27. The number of detentions served is only released to colleges if they request the information and the principal approves of it
a. Detention can still affect students’ recommendation letters for college
28. Any improvement made in cutting would be satisfactory
29. At a certain point, rebellion will subside
30. Attendance sheets go by periods
a. A double period class will have 2 attendance sheets
. Adjournment
