B. Junior Achievement: High School Heroes Program – The Council of Student Activities Brach of Student Government is in the process of planning it. As of now, it is scheduled for May 26th, 2010. High School Heroes is a program that invites high school students to a local elementary school to teach a pre-determined curriculum for a full day.
C. UNSL Conference – The United Network of Student Leaders in the Empowerment Schools Organization (Network 6) is planning a Leadership Conference on May 14th, 2010 at the College of Staten Island. Several members of Student Government will be attending. The names were taken down today at the meeting. If there are any discrepancies, please email Angelica Ahmed at gellie123@gmail.com
D. Senior Selective Conferences – This pertains to the class of 2011 and beyond. Juniors will soon be able to choose their Senior Math and English courses universally through a uniform method of selection. The process is similar to selecting a major which will include an essay, recommendation from teacher and so forth. More details to be released soon
III. COSA Notes
A. Seniors: College Dorm Bed sheets – College Dorm Beds are slightly larger than the ones that you sleep in at home. A company contacted Tech to see if we are interested in a fundraiser to sell Bed sheets for dorm rooms. Senior Government will investigate.
B. America’s Favorite School Update – The Alumni Foundation has received the check for $20,000. As promised $14,000 will go toward the renovation of the 3rd floor boy’s locker room. The school is actively working with vendors to determine the most cost effective method to approach this project. $6000 will go toward student activities.
C. Calendar:
1. 3/24: Report Cards Distributed in PREFECT
2. 3/26: Last Day of school before Spring Break
3. 3/19: CULTURE DAY SHOW IS POSTPONED
4. 4/7 – Return from Spring Break
5. 4/10: Juniors, College Process Info Night (Colleges that Change Lives)
IV. Open Agenda
A. Recycling Program at Tech – Through countless attempts to initiate a recycling program at Tech, no progress is being made. The custodial staff will not cooperate with anyone because they refuse to sort the garbage into separate bags. Instead, they throw everything into one bag.
1. Attempts were made by Michelle Gorbonosov to get recycling cans
2. Nicky Chen commented that if we do not get enough recycling cans to station them next to the current garbage cans then there is no use to having a program. Besides, the custodial staff is not cooperating so there is no point in pursing our efforts.
B. Express Elevators – Students are noticing that more and more teachers are using their keycards to activate the elevators to stop at a specific floor during passing. This significantly slows down the students because they have to stop at the Xth floor for them to get off. Nicky stated that it is convenient for them but it is inconvenient for the hundreds if not thousands of students who take the elevators daily. He continued saying that if teachers continue to use their key cards to stop the elevators at random floors during passing then we have invested in a system that useless because the main objective is to make express stops from 1-7 at all times during passing.
1. To our understanding, Principal Asher has advised the staff that Elevator C makes all local stops and encourages all staff to use that elevator instead of the express elevators during passing.
