it has become a space filler. "lol" adds something to the conversation that, without such a word, would otherwise seem more empty. for me, it serves as a "stop," signifying that i have ended my sentence, for i break up sentences into many small IMs. it also adds to lighten moods; many times, the exclusion of a lol can be a deciding factor between bleak seriousness or light-hearted conversation.
to me, lol has evolved from "LAUGH OUT LOUD" to a space filler, a tone alterer, and a mood setter.
"LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL," however, is a completely different thing.

I lol'd at doodle's post.
For me, "lol" have not evolved at all. If you people spam "LOL" over and over again, I'd think you're strange. Want a laughing drop?
