Hey everyone. I am an incoming sophomore. Got a few questions and need some clarifications on some issues. Thanks in advance. :)

1. Am I allowed to take any APs and be in any honor classes this school year? I heard that incoming students cannot.

2. I already took trigonometry and got a 96 on the regents. So will I be able to take pre-calculus this school year?

3. I've been to the orientation and the staircases seem really narrow. Does it get very crowded when going between floors?

When there's no idiot coming up the down staircases/ going down the up staircases. Should be fine... except when you get to the 5th/6th floors. The center staircases can be... a little crowded.

lol, I haven't really heard of any freshman taking APs so it isn't too much of a concern. I just feel that I may be behind if I can't take any APs this year because most sophomores can. Also, for some reason I don't have a daedalus account. The site tells me that my account username doesn't exist... As of traveling between floors, we can use elevators right?

Yeah, but they're kinda slow and the stairs are probably a better option.

And aren't trigonometry and precaclulus the same thing?

Well, in other schools around the country, there are 3 levels of algebra. Level 1 is "Algebra". Level 2 is "Trigonometry". Level 3 is "Pre Calculus". So, I think Tech should be like this too, no?This is for algebra levels only so geometry isn't included.

1- I'm pretty sure you can't take any APs or Honors this year, because you're an incoming student.

2- If you've taken the Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2/Trigonometry regents, you can take Pre-cal.

3- Usually just people going the wrong way makes the stairs crowded. You can use the elevators, but some are slow and get really crowded and some only go from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor.

Incoming sophomore students are programmed differently since you have already taken a year's worth of high school work. Please tell us which courses you have taken. If you scored well on those classes 85+/90+ ( don't have to tell us exact #s!) then you should call 718 804 6592 to speak to a programming specialist about your concerns. The person you want to speak to is Paul Hoftyzer (and that is this direct # to his desk) who is the chairman of the programming committee. If you cannot reach him by phone, email him at phoftyzer@bths.edu ... be sure to include that you are an incoming students and your OSIS # and full name so that he can find you in the system.

Hi Anthony. I was an incoming sophomore too, and had the same questions you did. I never called the programming office to speak about my schedule. however , I did ask my guidance counselor if I could be in any honor/ ap classes after school when they were doing the program changes ( usually the first/ second week of school) . My guidance counselor gave me a paper where I could put down the classes I requested. The paper was sent to the programming office and a week later, I was not scheduled to the classes because there was no space left .

You took geometry right? Just wondering
If you did take geometry. you will be placed into a Precalculus/ Introduction to Calculus class. Try asking if they'll let you be placed into ap calculus ab . ( Same with Ap world and AP euro in lieu of global 3/4) Good luck

Ah I see. After taking a look at my schedule I'll ask my counselor if there is a need to change classes I suppose. Also, shouldn't I be taking calculus next year and not this year provided that I will be taking pre calc this year?

I think they are going to be both in a year. That's why it's called 'Precalculus/ Introduction to Calculus' . The class is really slow compared to Calc AB. You see, in tech, after trig most kids will either go to 'Precalculus/ Introduction to Calculus' or ap Calc AB.

Hai Anthony! Welcome to Tech =]

I'll answer your questions even though I already did. =p

1. Considering incoming freshmen couldn't take APs/electives, I doubt that incoming soph's can.

2. You probably will take pre-calc as a math class. If not talk to your guidance counselor for help?

3. Staircases are enough to fit two people across. It's usually enough, unless there's a line of people going down the up staircase. Beware of the one person you always find going the wrong way.

Got my classes but no schedule from Parent ARIS link because my Daedalus account has not been created yet for some reason. So I didn't get any honor and AP classes? Did they not even grant me pre-calculus?!

I know you took the regents, but did you take the class? I wasn't sure based on your post. If you didn't take the class that might be why you are placed in Trig. If you did take the class, then you need to make sure you have an updated transcript with your grades sent to the school so they can place you into Calculus.
