III. Business

A. Ms. O Hara’s ideas about quality life

1. Cleanliness

a. Problem

i. Students are leaving the lunchroom a mess and are not cleaning up after themselves.

b. Possible Solutions

i. Recruit students to clean up the lunch tables in return for community service

ii. Carolyne proposed that we keep a log book where the volunteers could sign in and sign out.

iii. We should assign each student a specific number of tables (just like waiters in a restaurant), so the Deans can make sure that everyone did their job.

c. Majority of SGO members supported the idea of giving out community service awards to the students that are willing to help out.

2. Announcements

a. Problem

i. There are no permanent students in each lunch period to read the announcements

b. Solution

i. 2 SGO members per lunch period were chosen to read the announcement, in case one of them is absent.

4th pd- Michelle (Primary) Marouf

5th pd- Eugene (Primary), Jim

6th pd- David (Primary), Ikra

7th pd- Jacob (Primary), Sima

8th pd- None of the SGO members have this lunch period. We will ask the new members

3. Elevators

a. Problem

i. Students are vandalizing the elevators and ripping off the machines from the elevator walls.

b. Possible Solutions

i. The 3 strike Rule

- First time- Elevator will be shut down for a day

- Second time- Elevator will be shut down for a week

- Third time- Elevator will be shut down for a month

- Majority of SGO members voted against this decision

ii. Place a camera inside the elevator

- Mr. Williams isn’t sure about this idea because this is going to be expensive

iii. Place a camera outside the elevator

- Since the security guards won’t be able to see inside the elevator, they won’t be able to pick out the person amongst the crowd.

iv. Have a dean operate the elevator

- Mr. Kaelin said that Elevator operators get paid more than other staff. This is considered to be an unnecessary expense. School aids refuse to do this job because they don’t get paid as much as the Elevator operators.

v. For the next meeting, we must come up with another alternative solution

B. Student Planners

1. Problem

i. Students are very angry about not having a student planner.

ii. Upperclassmen are physically abusing the freshmen for their planners

2. Solutions

i. Seniors will sell student planners and use it as a senior fundraiser

ii. The planners will be sold in the GO store

iii. The senior planners will have a specific design

iv. Since we want to have the planner by October 13th (Senior Information night), we must get all the pages done by September 21st.

- The sophomores and juniors decided that there wasn’t enough time or budget to plan out the Student Planners and therefore only the Senior Class will be selling planners.

v. The Student planners might be used as a senior fundraiser from now on.

C. New SGO Cards and Service Credit Requirement

1. From now on, every year, students will have to purchase the new SGO card for $10

2. Advisors must prepare an excel sheet with the name of club members and send it to Mr. Williams.

i. Only then, will the service credits be updated.

3. Changing of the written policy regarding SGO cards

i. Mr. Williams suggested that we change the policy, so that students have to earn a minimum number of credits each year. Students would have to purchase a new card each year. The money raised from the SGO cards will go toward student activities

ii. Jacob asked if it is legal to make students pay $10 for student activities

- In response, Mr. Kaelin said that the school is not saying that students can’t graduate from high school without paying for the SGO card. Students will still receive the NYC and NYC Dept Diploma. However, they will not receive the Brooklyn Tech Diploma if they do not fulfill the service credit requirement. The cards are used to document that service. Mr. Kaelin also added that in College, students have to pay a student activities fee, whether they participate in it or not.

iii. Eugene said that the kids that haven’t handed in their SGO cards for three years and planned to hand everything in their senior year are going to be upset over the new policy of having to buy an SGO card for every year they missed.

- Mr. Williams responded by saying that since there was no record of anything those students did for the past years, they need to buy the cards.

- Mr. Kaelin also added that this is about funding clubs and activities. The SGO card will pay for these activities. Every time someone doesn’t buy an SGO Card, there is less money for club activities. If students want to keep their clubs, then they must purchase an SGO Card.

iv. Jacob asked, what are the consequences for not buying an SGO card every year?

- Ikra responded by saying that for the College questionnaire, juniors need a copy of their SGO cards to show as proof of their extracurricular activities, from the past three years. If a student mentions that he/she was a member of a specific club but does not have it written on his/her SGO card, the guidance counselor will not write this information on the recommendation letter. This will make students feel obligated to buy an SGO card every year.

v. Majority voted to change the Policy

- Students will be mandated to earn 4 credits per term every year.

D. Approval of Club Application Charters

1. Requirements

a. Dania mentioned that if SGO wanted to revoke a club’s charter they could but do not have to do it for the following reasons:

i. All clubs must have a location for meeting

ii. Only one advisor per club. Multiple clubs with the same advisor will have their club charters disapproved

iii. The club must be original and not be similar to a pre existing club.

2. Pending List

a. The Crochet Club

i. Pending until room of meeting is determined

E. AP Exam Grade Policy

1. Tabled

F. SGO Hoodies

1. Tabled

G. Updating the bulletin board outside 1w2, and the ones in the center section of the café

VI. Reminders

1. For the next meeting, we must come up with another alternative solution to the elevator issues, because we rejected The 3 Strikes rule proposed by Ms. O Hara.
