I'm going to start my corporation and change how people use computers :-) Im gonna make WinuX. It's far off though, just a thought.

That just sounds like Lindows, which is already out for a few years. :P

Yeah but lindows aren't really a combo of windows and linux. Have you tried Lindows? It's a bad windows with bad hardware support, and it doesn't support any windows software, not that it should but if it doesn't why do they call it lindows. Linux is no harder to use so I'd rather keep my dollar and use linux. Don't ask me how WinuX will be different..... its confidential :D

Lindows is a cheap ploy to attempt to make money. If they wanted there OS to become anything universal they needed hardware support, not so much software support since if alot of people would switch to lindows big software companies like adobe and macromedia would make deals with lindows and start developing.

No, it wasn't. Lindows (Linspire) was created with good intentions in mind. It wanted to combine the flexibility of Windows with the low software price of Linux. It's quite the opposite of what you just said.

Just because the OS itself is !@#$py, doesnt mean it was a "cheap ploy to attempt to make money." I personally believe it was a good idea, even if it didnt take off.

I was saying it was a good idea it didn't take off. It will be relatively hard since MS won't let you see the source code if your trying to take them down...........

They never let anybody see the source, not even countries. Taiwan wanted to use it as their main os in the government but wanted to see the source (and make changes, along with a security audit) first and Microsoft denied them.

Linspire makes extensive use of "wine" (Wine is not an emulator.) Which allows windows programs to access windows libraries under linux. It also converts the graphics calls to use X (the most used display system under any of the *nix's - you can even get copies the run on OSX or Windows) so you can actually use the programs.

More information can be found here at their main website.

Quote

Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix.

Think of Wine as a Windows compatibility layer. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely alternative implementation consisting of 100% Microsoft-free code, but it can optionally use native system DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development toolkit (Winelib) for porting Windows sources to Unix and a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows binaries to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris.

But linspire also themed KDE (I believe) to look and work like windows would, and wrote a bunch of programs to work like windows would.

The idea was to make linux easier to use for windows people (and it did) not to replace windows. And of course the cost and all.

I know what wine is. you don't need linspire to download wine, its available for all the popular linux kernels and OSX. Wine is very buggy it will run alot of apps for me though. Theres also crossover office which uses wine to some how make flash and someother big windows programs work in linux. If linspire really wanted to they should of made there own gui instead of skining a existing gui. KDE is very clunky anyways, I like icewm because its easy very lightweight and handles 32 bit(very important......).

For osx? I remember something about backing it with an emulator.. you know more?

I like KDE, I don't like all the k* apps but its a nice fully rounded (I won't say its bloat free) interface. If all I need is a display I don't even bother with a window manager usually. Or I use Xfree in rootless mode on my mac (and exceed on my pc).

Anyway - yea... I've got windows installed on a machine too.

KDE is good for begginers but i get the same functionality from icewm and alot less cpu usage. the names are dumb like Khex edit and Ghex edit and kwrite lol the names are pointless.

Just because you've never tried linux and/or don't know how to use it to it's full power, or use it all doesnt mean it's worse than windows.

You really should know by now that most "xyz is better than zyx" statements are biased. It just depends on personal opinion.

Windows + Linux = lindows. Its now called linspire. It wasn't really linux and windows. It most resembles linux.
