Does anyone here have a amd64 station? Can anyone tell me if it has any trouble emulating 32 bit, and have you tried out and 64 bit apps :-)?

macs and intel are in mainstream, so is amd. Linux isn't home computer mainstream, but alot of big servers run linux.

amd is a chip maker like intel. amd64 is the new 64 bit cpu. Intel has a 64 bit cpu(itanium) but it cant emulate 32 bit. Most people here are running 32 bit windows. 16 bit is what a dos prompt looks like, 32 bit is all graphical I want to see what 64 bit is :-). And as I said alot of IT professionals and big servers run linux for many reason. Also alot of developers use it because gcc is better than any windows c compiler.
Yea id also like to add www.microsuck.com is a good site, despite the name.

Well, threre aren't any mainsteam apps on 64 bit processors as of right now, but be paitent 64bit app will probally start poping up once intel jumps on the 64bit bandwagon. And you your looking to upgrade a cpu 64 is the way to go- i mean why go for intel when AMD is proven faster, runs cooler (good for overclocking) and is just plainly better. A regular AMD 64 2800+ cost about 200$ and a Intel 2.8 GHz cost just about the same, but AMD is proven faster than intel on 32bit apps AND it can run 64 bit apps so your basically future proofed for a few years. How can Intel even compete? The answer: Coroprations like Dell and other mainstream pc makers are attatched to Intel Processors (probally from some under the table marketing deal). And since dell is basically the nation's largest pc making company most people don have 64bit computers to run 64bit apps therefore programs today are still made to run in 32bit. But don worry, theres a light at the end of the horizon, Other compaines like Voodoo pc, Alienware, Falcon Northwest, Ibuypower, Velocity Micro, Vicious, Cyberpower,Gateway and Cyberpower are jumping on the AMD Bandwagon. Sooner or later people will realize that Intel is no longer the leading processer defeted by AMD's suproirity and better prices. And to answer your question, theres a 64bit version of windows xp but its not on the market yet. Right now only business corprations have it but every now and then one leaks out on to eBay.

AMD64s has no known problem on 32bit apps

64 bit cpu's have been out for a while intel came out with them before amd, intel has the itanium which is aroun $800, it also can't emulate 32 bit. Windows 64 bit isnt 64 bit its a 32 bit OS with some 64 bit applications, windows 64 bit won't run on itanium or sparc64's or any other sparc architecture. There are linux versions for the amd 64, they also aren't totally 64 bit only for the amd64. There are true 64bit linux/unix's out there. 64 bit is the way to go and x86 architecture's at the end of the line, intel has said so it's self. Linux has other architecture versions not just x86 :-)

I have a Mobile AMD Athlon 64 3000+. The difference between these and the desktop version is that it has 1 MB of L2 cache, whereas the desktop 3000+ has 512k.
It's great with 32 bit apps (benchmarking sites show it too). I haven't really tried it with 64 bit apps yet.
I'm too afraid to even touch Windows XP 64 bit edition. I don't trust Microsoft.

On another note, Linux, Macs, and Intel are mainstream. It just depends on what you like. Linux is rapidly gaining foothold in the industry. Personally, I like AMD processors because they are cheaper than Intel, while perform basically the same.

The Duron completely Obliterated the Celeron, at a much lower price point as well.

However, the New Celeron D is a completely different story...

Not to mention the AMD Sempron.

It's easy to get lost with so many new products coming out.

You should be scared of windows 64 bit edition, lol. Try out mandrake64 or SuSE64.

Why would anyone get a 64-bit processor when you are running 32-bit apps? It is slower since the computer has to convert the 32-bit data into 64-bit. In addition, word processing is in 8-bit. A 32-bit processor is more native to 8-bit than 64-bit.

Future proofing. I might try out some 64bit Linux distros once they are more supported (ATI doesn't particularly support drivers that well for 64bit). And when the 64 bit programs start coming, I'll be ready.

There will be alot of complaints when MS throws a true 64 bit OS on the market, like the same thing with IE, except a whole OS. And frightcrawler, does ati even write drivers for linux? That cpu is to good to lay around until it becomes more popular.....give it to me :-)

Nope. :P My precioussss...
Yeah, ATI has linux drivers. You can find them here.

NVIDIA is much more linux friendly, though.
