hi folks.

my computer has got a very nasty virus which is rendering it useless..

at first it prompted me to downlad Microsoft optimum software to locate and remove the virus. now the microsoft program is actually stopping me from using the computer.

i've managed to do a system restore, which has improved things, but its still not right..

any ideas guys (or girls)..

Thanks in advance

Use Microsoft Security Essentials for a scan.
Then run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware
Then run Spybot- Search and Destroy. If that doesn't help, go to a computer help forum.
bleepingcomputer.com fixed mine.

I would append these two steps BEFORE going with Clement's suggestions:

Boot into Safe Mode, preferably without Networking Support (tap "F8" just before the Windows loading screen shows up). This does reduce the amount of processes that start up in the beginning and historically, it was helpful in preventing many viruses/spyware from loading as well (though it's not as foolproof as it once was)

Lawrence Abrams of Bleeping Computer made a nifty freeware utility called "RKill," which pretty much stops many known malware processes. Mind you, it only stops them from running in the background, but doesn't delete them. But that is a very big help to your utilities of choice, as the malware will not be able to interfere.

Load the RKill program onto a disposable flash drive or somewhere that you wouldn't mind formatting (if the spyware manages to infect the removable drive as well). I personally load RKill onto a SD Card with the Write-Protect switch on and then insert that into an SD Card reader. Works like a charm!
