What caused this? Were the email accounts hacked? If so, why is our school's system so easily hacked?

They weren't hacked. The emails were just spoofed. Anyone can do this with no hacking ability needed.

I'm more concerned with the fact that they had access to the whole mailing list. Although that's probably something that should be fixed on google's end.

Edit: I also think that whatever method was used to do this is publicly accessible and therefore will be fixed soon since I got a similarly spoofed email from a very popular gaming company.

I think you could just email bths20XX@bths.edu and everyone in that graduating year would get the email. At this point there still has been no breach in security or were there any vulnerabilities exploited.

Emkei was used. It's in the headers. I tried reporting the site to its respective host and I even blacklisted it via spamcop. No updates on the reports. The site still exists, unfortunately.

This is getting ridiculous. The e-mails were funny when it was terse, but now they've just turned into spam...and some look quite inappropriate.

So a bunch of students with absolutely nothing better to do learned how to spoof emails, and now they're just spamming everyone's inbox with lame, annoying, dumb messages. Great. I really don't see what's so "funny" or "cool" about any of this. Just very irritating.
