writing down every assignment helps big time. and tech provides freshman with planners too.
get to know your teachers is also great advice. this comes in big when you have to decide who you want to ask for recommendations. for college applications, even though it is recommended that you ask your junior teachers for recommendations, if your freshman teachers know you better, the recommendation would come out a lot stronger.
as for the workload, you need to develop strong time management. if you want it to not kill your sleep time, you shouldn't procrastinate. you'll think that you'll learn your lesson after pulling one all-nighter, you probably won't. you'll have to make yourself work. unless cramming everything in actually works for you, then just chill (get a week of good sleep) and pull an all-nighter the day before.
tech kids tend to develop a coffee/energy drink habit by sophomore (if you take APs/in Gateway).

Also, not only should you be able to set time aside to projects and regular daily hw you should try and set up a rough schedule of hw to do throughout the week/month/marking period if you have a teacher(s) that hands out a list of hw assignments for the marking period/ semester. Some teachers will have due dates on the sheet others assign them as the year goes by.
Try to go to tutoring as soon as you can when you need it, it'll just make your life easier than waiting until the point where you desperately need help or the day before a project, especially term project is due.
Try to get you hw routine straightened out early so you will be able to make room for studying when necessary including finals and regents.
Please don't procrastinated on projects ,final essay drafts, and oral presentations. Doing crappy on regular daily hw or hw quizzes is one thing but on a project is another.
You'll be better excused from procrastination once you're better experienced and skilled in the art of BS.
