Hi everyone,

I just want to start by saying that I am an 8th grader who wants to get into Brooklyn Tech (That's obvious since I'm on this forum) All summer I was preparing for the SHSAT for the fall. I completed the barrons, kaplan, and the two handbooks the schools give us. I scored a 78 on the Math section and an 80 on the Verbal. That gives me a total score of 79/100. Will that score get me into Brooklyn Tech? I would really appreciate some constructive feedback! Thanks!

The SHSAT is not scored on a scale of 100. But with that score you definitely will make it into Tech. Tech's SHSAT cutoff is usually 485-49x.
Hope you do well on the SHSAT

Tech's cutoff score, along with every other school's, is relative. It depends on how well the students do on the test, and how many seats are available. For example, last year's cutoff score was around 490. In 2010, it was higher, because the students scored higher. Also, the "out of 100" thing doesn't really count for anything, because the test is scored based on a formula known only by the Department of Education (there are rumors that you get 200 points for writing your name correctly, though that is entirely incorrect. The SAT does that, not the SHSAT). I only went to Kaplan's, and their program sucked, and I got in with a 517 so just do your best and study regularly (I know it sounds cliche, but it's true). Good luck.

Instead of aiming for Brooklyn Tech, aim for something like Stuyvesant but put Brooklyn Tech first on the choices given to you.
You might end up getting a high grade by going for the standards of Stuy instead of Tech and since you put Tech first, you'll get into Tech.

That's how I got in.

What kind of logic is that?

The kind of logic that made one of the definitions on urban dictionary of Brooklyn Tech "the action of getting rejected from Stuyvesant."

Doesn't explain how you get a higher score by choosing Tech over Stuy.

There's... OH LOOK!

He didn't respond. Sadface.

But anyway, there's no point in continuing this fail/win logic conversation. /end discussion.

While that may be true, the Class of '15,'14,'13,'12 has seen it easier and easier to get into Tech after the class of '11. Honestly it doesn't mean as much as it used and I think Townsend harris is better than Tech atm.

It might be, but Townsend Harris admits people with like 96-99 average people from different Middle Schools. It's a qualification to get into the school just like the SHSAT is to get into Brooklyn Tech. It's not really the school that's a better school, it's the people that go there. A bad school can be considered a good school if it has like only 95+ average Middle School students going there. It's a work ethic that's accepted rather than the score on a test.

Townsend might be better, but it's not good to assume such things about the school, but rather the children that go there. Townsend didn't make them like that, they were like that before they got in there.

Townsend Harris and Stuy would be too much work to stay in and still follow the schools standards- so I just aimed for tech when I could have gotten into Bronx Sci.
