Hello Everyone =)
This is Sasha Estrella – Jones (and if you don’t know the deal w/ Linda’s name it’s bc I don’t have a fb) and I finally have some answers for us regarding the new bell schedule and other policies that will be in effect starting September of 2012! Today I had a scheduled meeting w/ Asher, and he provided me with a lot of info. that I am going to try and condense to as little as possible.
To answer the first question that everyone has been talking about, yes, the school day will be extended next year. But, every class will only be 45 mins. long (excluding 47 mins. for 3rd), and that means 8th period will be ending at 2:30pm and 9th period will be ending at 3:19pm. All those 3:45pm 9th period are false rumors. If you want the complete full schedule just let me knoww, and I’ll post the timing for all the other periods. Thankfully 1st still starts @ 8am.
Now, why the change is the next question? The reason for this change is because of the Guide to Academic Policies, released February 2012, science lab are not allowed to receive credit. Once September starts, any senior who is taking a lab will have lab once a week with their science teacher. Also, lab grades are now going to be pass or fail. Asher is still talking it over with teacher how the labs will work into your class grade ie. participation credit or class work etc.
Some good news for next year is that, POSSIBLY, student who are on certain PSAL teams will be exempt from P.E. for 1 of the 2 semesters. This is still being worked out, but from speaking with Asher he seems willing and eager to put this policy into play.
Because of some of the new policies students will no longer be able to fail a class, pass the regents, and then pass the overall class. Basically at a minimum get a 65, so you’re not stuck repeating a class.
Thankfully, because Asher got the needed > 55% of teacher’s to vote yes, there will be tutoring next year, with some changes though. Instead of being Monday – Thursday for 37 ½ mins, tutoring will be Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for 33 mins.
I have more minor details, and if you want I can inform you guys, but Mr. Asher said w/i a couple of days a powerpoint on all the new changes will be put up on the bths.edu webpage. He is doing this, because next week there will be a Townhall Meeting. Everyone is invited, so please do show, and this is your time to ask answer any questions, suggestions and concerns that are not addressed in the powerpoint, so come prepared.
