In Topic: A few pre-freshmen questions

26 March 2012 - 04:33 PM

1. Not sure how to join the football team; I suppose you would just have to go to a meet and ask the coach.

2. AP and Honors courses are not offered for Freshman; at the end of the year however you may apply for available courses via Daedalus at the end of your Freshman year and so on.

3. Depends on what interests you; I go to Chess Club at times because I like playing Chess. There are many clubs, and if you don't like any of them, you can always start your own. :)

4. Lunch is average; if you don't hand in a lunch form, at the beginning you might pay for it. It should be just like the lunch at your old school, probably just a bigger cafeteria.

5. At times I do. It's quite a challenge to keep up with everything but it's all for the best. I'd guess I do enjoy it.

6. You'll have the basic classes for a Freshman depending if you took them already or not. If you took the Algebra Regents and passed, you'll be placed in Geometry if you took the Biology Regents and passed, then you'll probably be placed in Physics or Chemistry. Basic classes are a language (Spanish/French/Chinese), Science, History (Global), English, Math, and a special engineering class that counts as art credit called DDP. This is my Sophomore schedule, I couldn't find my Freshman one but you'll get something like this on your first day. It's called a program card.

7. A bit tiring, I'm not sure how I was when I was a Freshman though. I was a bit more resourceful than others so I didn't get lost or anything so I got around fine. For Sophomore year, a typical day for me is to go up 7 floors using the elevator, go down one to Chemistry. Go down three to Gym. Go down two to AP World. Go up two to Trigonometry. Go up four to Lunch. Go down one to Spanish. Go down two to DE. Then go for clubs or extracurricular activities at tenth period. Lots of walking and work. You have four minutes to pass between classes no matter if you're supposed to go from the first floor to the eighth floor, but you'll usually do fine.

8. Do your best, study, do your homework, the usual stuff. Same thing at your old school and with all schools in general, just work and learn.

A few other things I should mention; I had Swim Gym in the basement with xMrStrife up there. If there's a pool on the tenth floor, then I guess there's two pools in Tech.

I don't know how to swim, I barely know how to float. In Swim Gym for one marking period, we would play games like water polo or volleyball in the pool and practice basics like bobs (submerging your head in the water and resurfacing), going off in a streamline position (kicking off the poolside straight through the water) and other things. They give you a test if you know how to swim or not, but if you don't like me, you don't have to take it and you can stay in the shallow end which is about four feet high. For three marking periods, you might learn how to swim to a greater extent.

Join at least one club this year and if you like, stick with it for all four years and you'll get the 32 club credits required to graduate. And that's all I have to comment on the previous posts. ._.

I'm a sophomore in Tech currently, and my answers are based on my experiences.

1) The area isn't that bad, there are many delis and food stores around to fill you up after school; one dollar pizza stores and a McDonald's a few blocks away. Two delis. The hospital there is conveniently located, I don't suppose it is used all that much by Tech students but if you do get severely injured, then there you are. Keep away from Fort Greene park; I've heard bad things go on there although they probably joke (eg. someone getting mugged, jumped, etc.) I haven't went to the park except for a club/team photo but I was with people during that time so I was alright. I've heard rare cases of crime happening at Tech but usually I can leave Tech at six or so and get home safely.

2) A bit chaotic, many new people to meet and friends to have. You'll have to get used to understanding the cycle schedule and how to get around Tech. You might be late to a couple of classes getting used to the structure of Tech, but not too late and usually teachers are nice to Freshman (at least mine were). First day you fill out cards for the teacher's gradebooks and have no homework, later on you receive homework and good education.

3) I'm a guy, can't tell you much about that. Boys and girls have separate locker rooms. In swim gym (Tech has a swimming pool, so it's possible to get Swim Gym), boys and girls still have separate locker rooms, but you share the pool with the guys. Regular gym is the same, share the same room with the guys whether it's weight training or step aerobics.

4) I was a lucky guy, I don't get many crazy or aggressive teachers. There are some amazing teachers at Tech of whom you can learn many things from, but the worst you'll have to worry about is if a teacher is hard or not. Get the wrong teacher, and you could literally fail a marking period with a 60. Most give you a good grade if you do work though.

5) LOL there are no lockers in the hallways at Tech except in Gym, good luck getting pushed into one. But no, you won't get pushed into a locker, they're small enough and people are busy changing in Gym to do that.

6) Not a dumb question at all, I've only had a little bit of experience with a bully, but they're not necessarily bullies, just jerks. If someone consistently bothers you, then tell a teacher or someone else. I once tried to sit at a table during my Freshman year, some guy said it was reserved for the football team and got all angry and told me to leave. It wasn't a nice time, but since then I've gotten to know many people around me, some people can be very considerate while others can be very foolish in terms of character.

In Sophomore year you get to pick majors at Tech which are ranked by your power index. Your power index includes your average for all majors, so do your best and try to get a high average to increase your chance of getting into the major you want. They count two terms of Freshman year and one term of Sophomore year, so Freshman year holds some considerable importance; do great this year. I myself was put in the Law and Society major; I love humanities classes and I'm not so good in math or the engineering subjects. There are two humanities majors at Tech, Law and SSR, so if you're like me, do good in SS and English; otherwise, Tech has a multitude of engineering majors.

Also, unlike most high schools, in Freshman year you'll have a class called DDP where you'll use Autodesk Inventor. It's your art credit, but a little bit of an engineering class as well; it's Tech after all.

Have a nice time at Tech. :)

For major selection, both your Freshman and Sophomore grades are counted, your PI calculation might not be exact. Let's let Daedalus handle that stuff. :)
The cutoff score for majors changes every year, LAS is a popular major, there's no telling whether or not the cutoff score may increase or decrease. What I'd say is just try your best in your Social Studies and English classes, get a good average, put LAS as your first choice, and hope you get in. Most people get into their first choices.

You have a decent chance. Don't worry too much about it though. By the way, I'm choosing LAS too. :D

You're registered. Don't worry about it.
